My man and I had dinner there and it was good. I wasn't like, "woo-ee, this is awesome." But it was definitely pretty good. I might pick different dishes next time, ours were pretty straightforward. But there were some other "lookers" on the menu to go back for. The menu has some of the same stuff from the old menu, but it's been expanded. Not sure about the buffet situation. I'd be into trying that for lunch. There seems to be a ton more stuff for a vegetarian, like myself and my Mr. Yay! So picking dishes took a while. The new digs are nice. Pretty cobalt blue and a deep tangerine orange adorn the walls and really cool lookin' olive covered lamps dot the ceiling. The tables are pretty wooden ones with an evident grain and the glasses are simple, tall and kept full of water. The large windows make for an extra fun dining experience. It's fun to stare out and see who you know in the neighborhood walking by. Go check it out!
i'm glad to hear the menu has expanded. the owners had been planning to expand the menu for over a year. the buffet makes them tons of money for little prep work compared to regular lunch, so i'm guessing they'll still have it.
I'm actually kind of surprised that people like that place. I got so sick the one time I went there I would never go back. Also if you walk down the street behind the restaurant there is some *horrible* (ie dead animal carcass rotting) smell coming from the dumpster behind their building. It could belong to any one of the restaurants there I suppose. I guess the combination of the two has made me not want to go back.
Many years ago, I lived in a building on Highland Ave. that was unfortunately close to the dumpster you're refering to. So, I can report that the stench was there long before Martsa's; I always thought it was due to McKinnon's.
Martsa is awesome, I ate their last night. Space looks nice, expanded menu, same super-nice people. Food was good, especially considering they're probably still working some kinks out. And it was pretty crowded. One temporary downer: they're in a bit of limbo over the alcohol license -- no longer BYO but not yet licensed.
We ate there tonight. The food and drink (creamy spinach soup, mandarin chicken entre and lime soda for me) were awesome--delicious, well-prepared, fresh and seemingly healthy. We'll definitely add it as a welcome and unique addition to our rotation of favorite restaurants in Davis Square.
I was there!
