I'd like to get my hands on some date molasses and some red miso, and somehow I don't think the Shaw's is going to cut it.

Any thoughts on where I should be looking in the Somerville/Cambridge area?

Though I'm pretty sure Asian grocery sources have been referenced previously:

1) Kotobukiya in the Porter Exchange.

2) Failing that, try the Korean grocery store in Union Square.

3) Pretty much any of the grocery stores in Chinatown.

There are many misos at Kotobukiya inside the Porter Exchange. Don't know about the date molasses, but if you can't find it at a local ethnic market, maybe WholeFoods?

No worries. It's a welcome change from all of the snow and parking complaints. ^^

Oh, and for the date molasses, you may be able to find it at one of the Indian grocers in Central Square.

Date molasses, your best bet is one of the line of Armenian markets along Mt. Auburn in Watertown. They're all clustered in the same two blocks; it's a worthwhile trip even if they don't have it. (In particular, it's one of the better places in the area to get imported pistachios.)

Yeah, the whole area of food shopping, take-out, and restaurants is a pretty weak part of our current tagging scheme.

Yep, I was going to recommend Sevan Bakery (http://www.sevanboston.com).

the Harvest in Central Square has a wide variety of miso, both pasteurized and fancy raw local stuff, red and yellow, several brands.

There is also an Indian grocer outside Teele Square, at the corner of Broadway and North Street. It is pretty comprehensive.

Sweet. That's good to know.

Get your miso from South River Miso. Their 5 year red miso is the best. Whole foods has it in glass jars in the fridge section.

They make their miso here in Mass and it is better than anything I got outside of Japan.

There's a quickie-mart-type-place across from Bread & Butter Konvenience on Mass Ave that has lots of Indian groceries. I forget the name of the place, but it's the one with a sign in the window that says "GOAT".

I think it's Bengali or Pakistani, though that may not matter much. Never been inside.

It's called "Foodland," and at least a few months ago (when I was on a question for palm sugar) they had date molasses.

My roommate bought goat brains there, and he says they took a goat head from a fridge and sawed it in half right in front of him, offering him the eyeballs, too.

Whatever nationality the place is, at least you know where you can buy goat eyes in the Davis Square area!

It's not too hard to find red miso around here. There's always some at Harvest Coop in Central. What's tons harder is finding bitter (hatcho) and other kinds of miso - I've never successfully found hatcho in MA at all.

there's also a persian bakery & market near the armenian ones on mt. auburn street (between the armenian bakeries and watertown square). it's got a lot of staples for sale in addition to stuff they bake on-site, including some of the cheapest saffron i've seen in boston.

I confess, I'm mostly ignorant of the ethnicities of the various businesses and was even when I lived there, but I'm pretty sure there's a Russian market there as well as some others. The bulk of the stock seems mostly homogenous across stores, but each has a few things that the others don't.

i believe iran is one of the chief growers of saffron, so i'm guessing that's how that place is getting that particular offering so inexpensively. but yeah, the stock does seem to be fairly similar in general amongst the different stores in that area of watertown.
