This subject has come up a couple of times, though not often enough to get its own separate tag. ("Business services" really means "Any miscellaneous service that isn't popular enough for its own tag.) Here are the earlier posts:
None of those previous posts addressed specifically addressed places that would be safe for books, which I'd be interested in hearing about as well. I don't generally have things that mind temperature, but they would mind moisture and mildew.
http://www.publicstorage.com/index.aspx is recommended in one of those, and the website says it's climate controlled. It's very close to my house, so unless the prices are way out of line or I get a sketchy feeling, or I think they're lying about the dehumidifying, I'll probably go with them.
The prices are about 90 for a 5x5 or 110 for a 5x10, but I've got no idea how that compares to typical, or how high the ceilings are.
I did a lot of research on this for MITSFS (http://web.mit.edu/mitsfs/), which wanted to store about two tons of books. We settled on the Extra Space Storage in East Boston (near the airport) after having a really bad experience being jerked around by Planet Self Storage in Boston---they promised us a really good rate, and then when we came back to them with the necessary paperwork they claimed to have fired the guy who promised us the rate. Extra Space Storage in Somerville has heat but not climate control.
Here's a selection of my notes with Somerville-specific data:
Public Storage http://www.publicstorage.com 650 Eastern Ave Malden, MA open 7 days 5x10' room WITH AC, upstairs $1.00 for first month, $104.50 thereafter
onlineselfstorage.com 14 McGrath Highway Somerville $119/month, climate-controlled, open evenings and weekends, first month half off
i used the Public Storage in malden for a bunch of my stuff, including some books, for about a year. everything was completely undamaged and i had no other problems or anything else. (it was relatively climate controlled.) i didn't have any rare books or anything else very fragile, though, so i don't know if that would be a special concern of yours. in addition to the size mentioned in the comment i'm responding to, they also have other sizes of storage units at varying rates.
