I'm really tired of the uncomfortable futon I'm on right now! I have a really nice queen-size bed frame, but I need a mattress and box spring for it!

Does anyone know where I can pick up a CHEAP queen-sized mattress and box spring around Davis/Porter/Harvard/Central? I went by Sleepy's yesterday, and even their cheapest set was over $500. I just need something to get me by for a few months till I can get out and drop the cash on a nicer mattress.

I also want to avoid the used mattress route if possible, as I really don't like the thought of getting buggies from strangers!

Thanks!

there's a Mattress Discounters in the Fresh Pond 'Mall' near Alewife. It's where I bought my bed, years ago.

I have been told by a reputable grownup that the best place to buy a mattress is Macy's. They deliver and will take your old mattress away (you have to ask for this service, but I think it's free) and have a 10-year warranty (keep a warranty file for it.) It is not, however, cheap.

I'd go so far as to say a good mattress is not cheap and a cheap mattress is not good. If it's just for a few months, get another futon at any of the various futon worlds.

ikea! as long as you have a car. you can get the prices and the dimensions of them online (most roll-up into manageable sizes)

Bob's Discount Furniture has a website and really good prices for mattresses. I didn't care for their $200 mattress in the store, but I did end up getting the $400 one and am quite happy. (The cheaper one wasn't awful mind you). I think they charge 30ish for delivery.

The suggestion of Macy's is also a good one if you can catch a sale--you might be better off with them for the more long-term, high end purchase (which'll still end up being supercheap)

I got my mattress for $100ish at Boston Bed Company in Allston. It was not nice, but it was cheap and better than a futon.

ikea delivers. it might still be cheaper than somewhere else when you factor in the delivery prices, but i don't know what kind of quality they are.

FYI, Hotels routinely sell their old mattresses for next to nothing.

I do not recommend this for sanitary purposes, and you wanted to avoid a used *shudders* mattress, but I just wanted to throw this option out there, however repulsive it may be.

I thought it was illegal to sell old mattresses in Massachusetts.

I actually do know people who do this. They were not in MA, so you may very well be right. They bought king size beds from a hotel for like $20 each. For those who are into this sort of thing, it may be worht it to rent the UHaul and drive across state line to get it. It saves a mattress from the landfill. I would still like tp point out that the people I know who did this all wound up with bugs. And they were suprised by this outcome.

An excellent reason not to even consider doing this!

Oh, there are lots of reasons not to consider doing this.

However, I was unaware that this was even permitted, and I have seen several posts here from people who are into dumpster diving and stuff, so I figured I would just relay this information, with due caution, of course.

If you put a board or some other flat rigid material under the futon, that will deal with feeling the wood slats below. My girlfriend and I did that with our futon and it really made a difference. Futons are really intended to be put on solid surfaces, not slats or springs - they just don't work well with them.
Also, you should consider getting a piece of high density foam to put underneath the futon. The nicer of the foam mattress pads at Ikea would do, and I'm sure that there are mattress stores around here that sell foam mattress pads.

"big john's mattress factory" is closer to kendall and lechemere, but ime (eight years ago?) cheap and good quality.

Big John's is no more. They closed up awhile back.

I bought my bed 8 years ago (mattress & platform frame, in unfinished pine) from Boston Bed Company on Comm. Ave. in Allston, and I'm still sleeping on it--at that time, the mattress (a decent enough full size) was around $200, the frame was $150ish, and delivery was $30 (which included getting the old mattress hauled away). I don't know how they are or what their prices are these days, but they might be worth checking out.

(Oh, and thanks for the mental image regarding squeaky futons and company... ;-)

Put something under the futon to take away the slats, and spend a tiny bit of $ on a good 2inch or so thick memory foam topper. Way cheaper than a whole new set, and you can use the memory foam again on a new bed if you want.

Mystic Bedding. (http://www.mysticbedding.com/) It's completely awesome. Well worth the bus/taxi fare to get there.

What am I supposed to do with an old mattress? I have a full size mattress and Box that's been passed around my family for a few years and seldom used. I am getting rid of our guest room and want to get rid of it. If I try to give it away, is that still sketchy?

Can I throw mattresses away? Recycle them?

When I bought my current mattress, the delivery people took away the old one. They didn't charge anything for this service, but some might. (Not that this really answers your question, unfortunately.)

You can give it to someone; there's no law against that.

However, none of the organizations that collects goods for homeless and poor people (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.) can legally take a mattress or box spring.

So you need to give it away to an individual or put it on the curb with the regular trash--mattresses and box springs each count as one piece of "furniture", and you're allowed to dispose of two pieces of furniture per week.

I got my latex foam mattress from Foam Rubber (http://foamrubber.com/) in Allston. They also sell covers for it.

I got mine at their store near Lechmere and I like it a lot. Somehow I liked one of their cheaper options best (the others were too soft, I think), which worked out well. I don't think it was their very cheapest though.

I second this -- they make the matresses right there behind the showroom. I'm on my ... 8th year (wow) with my Mystic Bedding mattress and box spring and it's still super-comfortable.
