Winter Hill Star Closing!

I was surprised as anything last night when I dropped by the market and it has reduced its hours until 5 PM -- and a sign on the door said it was closing for good on 1/26 (IIRC).

Already the shelves looked a bit on the bare side within!

It's never been a particularly great supermarket, but it was handy and quick from where I lived. I guess it was only a matter of time before the Super Stop & Shop drew away enough business.

It's sad we're losing a specialty bookstore: I know why she's doing it but I wish she'd reconsider.

I kind of wish I had the money to open a specialty library.

Pretty simple: most of her sales are online at this point, and they tend to be more specialized than a retail operation can reasonably support. The bookstore itself is essentially a tourist spot, but that doesn't drive the kind of foot traffic that keeps a bookstore open.

It's a shame because Kate's is a major stop on the mystery book tour circuit. Pretty much every author in the mystery genre from the major to the small-press has at least gone in to say hi. My dad's been trying to set up a signing there for a while and the above is why she told him it wasn't going to work.

Of course, the mystery community is rather small and I've heard rumors about other reasons, but considering how catty that area of publishing can get, I'm disinclined to believe them.
