My car's been acting up, needs to get its belts checked--can anyone recommend a garage in the Somerville area (even better if it's in Winter Hill)? A place that's affordable but also honest and not going to fleece me because I'm a woman who presumably doesn't know any better?

ABJ Foreign Motors (they also do domestics), at the bottom of Medford St where it crosses the tracks. 617-625-6632.

I like ABJ, which is right by Winter Hill, near the intersection of Pearl St. and Medford St.

I don't know a darn thing about garages, but the Car Talk web site has a section which reviews them, and I have found this section quite useful and reliable. It includes ratings from the Car Talk staff and user comments.

Not in Somerville but Good news Garage in Central Sq. is run by one of the brothers that does Car Talk on WBUR. I took my car to them for years and they're completely trustworthy.

i will second Good News Garage in Central. It's more than worth the hike. They will also do a diagnostic to tell you what's wrong and write it all down so that you can take it somewhere else to do the work (good if you have a warranty with someone else).

Fred Hubbard Gulf on Highland Street has always been very straightforward and honest. Though they did want to keep the '87 MR-2 running when it was costing more in repair bills than it was worth...(But I think it was just because Andy thought it was a very cool car and *deserved* to live forever!)
