I had one through MassSave/Keyspan. I don't think they allow you to choose your auditor, and I don't remember his name anyway, but it was an interesting process.
Indeed they will. I had this done a couple years ago at a place that had *no* insulation in the walls (because the house was so old and it had all decayed)
The guy told us to have the landlord reinsulate the walls.
I suggest you call or email Vithal Deshpande (vdeshpande@somervillema.gov, 617-625-6600 ext. 5070), and ask for information about getting in touch with Andrea Ranger of the City of Somerville's Commission on Energy Use and Climate Change.
Andrea can help you identify types and providers of various energy audits.
Also, if you call 311, they can send you a DVD we've produced of handy tips for reducing energy consumption at home.
We recently had one done through NSTAR. It was relatively informative, and worthwhile. As mentioned above, I don't believe we were given any choice in our auditor, and can't recall who it was anyway.
They ought to bring them up on their own (almost certainly will), but they've got a lot of information on the various home improvement rebates, energy loan offers, etc that they can give you, which is especially useful when (like us) one of the things that comes out of the audit is "man, that heating system's going to be a bear to replace when you get around to it."
Thanks for all the advice. I just called NSTAR's MassSave program (800 654-5833) and set up an energy audit. They do them in the morning and the afternoon (9 & 2), and I've even managed to snag a holiday appointment. Apparently they don't use any fancy technology (blower door, thermal imaging) on the initial visit but do have access to it if it's required. I'll let you all know what I learned after the audit is complete.
