This community wastes a lot of time yelling at each other about posts that need an lj-cut.  Is it possible to avoid this problem by automatically inserting an lj-cut on all new posts longer than a certain length, or even all new posts period?  We could then get back to the more important business of yelling at each other for legitimate reasons, like whose burritos are better.

I think we tried that, and I think there is a rule...but new people don't know about it, or don't know how to lj-cut, or whatever...or people think "oh, MY post isn't too long!" or they just ignore it.

It would be nice, though, if there were a way to automate it, rather like the new adult content cut thingum.

Unfortunately, LJ does not give moderators the power to edit posts in any way, including adding or removing LJ-cuts. I wish I did have the ability to do this.

I actually agree with this a lot. I run quite a few communities elsewhere and one of the things that always bugs me is that I cannot edit posts not my own. It's not really that I even want to edit users posts, but I often co-mod with others, and it would be wonderful to be able to append to something official that the other person has posted. The only work around I've used in the past is having a mod journal for all those official things, but that gets pretty messy.

I know that having mods be able to add stuff to posts seems like an abuse of power(I mean you don't want someone to change your post and then get in trouble for something you never said for one reason or another) but if there were a way that maybe users could "approve" mod additions or something. I donno.

I think it's a problem of subjectivity. I've seen people request cuts for things that are too short to merit one in my view.

Oh, and Chipotle is terrible.

I agree that LJ cuts are good manners and should be used.

I also find it regrettable that the mods don't have the ability to edit posts (or at least insert cuts), which I think is a serious flaw.

But really, what are the consequences for not using a cut? What's going to happen? Is the world really going to end? OMFG I have to scroll! Nooooo!!!!!!Please, someone explain to me the dire consequences for the Earth we live on when someone doesn't use a cut.

I feel this is a community group, and I would like to encourage all members of the Davis Sq. community to use it, including those who may not have posted to LJ before (or be computer savvy in the first place).

Yes, everyone should use a cut. But new posters and those less computer savvy tend to be error prone. If we act like adults and tell them politely, what are the chances they will use one the second time? I think pretty good.

And who knows, if we tolerate a more diverse group of contributors, maybe we'll have fewer posts about: cars, parking, snow, burritos, airplane noise.< /lj-cut>

Wouldn't setting the journal itself as "Contains Adult Content" or "Explicit" effectively cut every post? *ducks and runs* (Yes, I know that anyone whose age is old enough won't see the cuts, at least for the Adult setting.)

It's the nature of the beast that if you have a friendslist on LJ, people will constantly be cluttering it up with useless crap. A natural side effect of this is that people will always be complaining about people cluttering up their flist with useless crap. I leave it up to you to decide what's dumber: complaining about textual litter, or complaining about other people complaining about textual litter. In other words, what's ruder? Violating etiquette, or pointing out said violation?

Any time that's it's images, not text, my sympathy is with the person asking for the cut, since they do more than require the person to "just scroll past"; they slow the loading time and, if oversized, often screw up the page layout.

In the case of the Boloco owner's post, it was mega-long, but he quickly lj-cut it after several of us asked him to and explained how to do it. That worked out fine.

I submitted this LJ support request, but LJ support informed me that I really want to submit to [livejournal.com profile] suggestions instead. So I did. If my suggestion is approved by the moderators there, I'll post a link to it here.
