So I've been living in Somerville for over a year, and have decided that it's long past time that I change my official residency. I have no idea where to start. Where do I need to go and what should I bring with me?

Off the top of my head, assuming you rent not own:

  • Driver's License needs to list your actual address
  • Postal change of address?
  • Voter registration needs to reflect your actual address

I think you can probably do all of these things on-line at the relevant websites (that is, the USPS website for postal change of address, the RMV website for driver's licence, etc).

If you're talking about registering to vote here, you are exactly a day too late.

You can register to vote at any time. It's only "too late" to be able to vote in the upcoming primary. But go ahead and register so you'll be sure to be on the list for November.

You can also register when you get a driver's license--probably a good option for the OP.

until last year, every time i changed my listed address for my state ID card, i was given the option to also automatically switch my voting district. last year they said the law had changed, and this time i ended up having to separately file a change of address with the massachusetts election division (http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ELE/eleidx.htm).

by the way, to the OP, the RMV lets you change your address online (http://www.mass.gov/rmv/).

If you're now registered to vote somewhere else in Massachusetts, you'll need to travel back to your old precinct (or get an absentee ballot) for the February 5 primary.

If you're now registered in a different state and your primary is also February 5, I recommend voting there by absentee ballot, and not re-registering here until after that day. Just to avoid any possible confusion.
