So I've heard this rumor that if you are planning on having a party, you can phone the parking office and ask them to not ticket your street for that night. I was wondering both if this was still true and also if you had to phone them on Friday if your party was on the Saturday or Sunday.

I think the policy has changed, now they want you to come into the parking office, tell them you are having a party and the number of cars you expect. They then give you little green hang tags for you guests to put in their cars during the party. I've done this a number of times now and it works well.

it works well as long as the street has a decent number of spots/you only need a few. trying to get twenty tags for some of the side streets is not feasible.

I have been to friend's parties in the last 6 month in the Davis area and they have tags for the guests to hang on the review mirror.

I would call the parking office directly to get the information you are looking for as they will have the current information.

http://www.somervillema.gov/section.cfm?org=traffic&page=916 (Look under one-time event passes)

If you sign up for a Constituent Services account online on the city's website, you can request hang tags. But you still have to go to the parking office in person to pick them up.

If you want to find something on Somerville's website I recommend not wandering the site or using it's search feature and typing the following into a google search:
site:somervillema.gov OR site:somerville.ma.us your search terms here
so I used specifically:
site:somervillema.gov OR site:somerville.ma.us one time event parking
and got the above link as the first hit.
This sort of thing can be bookmarked to help you remember it.

Maybe that's because their search is broken and has been for at least 6 months. It seems no amount of email sent is enough to get anyone to do anything about it (even remove the link).

Have you tried 311 instead of an e-mail? If you do a 311 service request online, you can track the progress of it - I've had better luck with this than e-mail or phone calls for a variety of issues in the city.

I think we all should have refused to answer until we were invited to said party!

Also, I will point out that if the party is on Sunday it shouldn't be an issue since permit parking is not enforced on Sundays. (at least most places, dunno if this applies on all streets, but I would think it would)

12 noon

And remember that they don't like to be rushed. Don't show up expecting to get 20 tags...they'll be much friendlier if you call a few days in advance.
