Hello Everyone,

At Tuesday night's Young Somerville ResiStat meeting, an number of Somerville young adults (age 21-35) said they often find out about City-related issues here on the Davis Square LJ. Well, I missed inviting DSLJ folks to the meeting itself (sorry!) but there is a way you can still 'participate'...

I've posted all the materials from the event online at:

One of the documents is an Activities Packet with instructions, discussion questions, and mini-quizzes to see how engaged you are with your local gov't.  The other is an Information and Resources Packet about the workings of the City: Commissions, Elected officials, City departments, City initiatives, etc.  The Activities Packet (plus a pint or two of brew) helped guide participants through the Resources Packet, who then filled out a feedback form which will help City staff better reach young adults.

If you weren't able to attend, you and your housemates can use these two packets to reproduce the meeting on your own!  All it takes is two or more people (beer is optional).  If you do, just email me your answers to the feedback questions -- or post them as comments to this post!

Thanks,
Ethan

By the way, the Information and Resources Packet is an excellent guide to local government. You should find a way to distribute it more widely, and not just to 'young' residents. Good work.

It is a very informative document. There are a lot of committees and commissions I didn't know existed.

I added a link to it from this community's profile page. My only concern is whether it will be kept up to date.

I agree, it is an excellent guide. I'm going to circulate the link to folks i know who are newcomers to Somerville but not necessarily "young". Perhaps you could distribute it as a "newcomer's guide" too.

They're building an IKEA in Somerville?! This just made my day!

Does anyone know when it will open or where I can find more information on this project??

Construction should start later this year. I don't know how long it will take. It will be in Assembly Square, where Good Time Emporium is now.

Do we know anything about the Assembly Square Orange Line stop? Last I heard IKEA was literally paying for the stop themselves.

Ikea

Like Ikea or not, Ikea certainly deserves some sort of medal for endurance. They started planning and working on opening the Somerville store in 1998! They have spent millions on litigation. I would have thought after 5 or 6 years they would have given up.

There's been a lot in the press the last several years about IKEA moving into Assembly Sq, it's been controversial for a number of reasons. For official city info, this page is the starting point:

excerpt: "Phase 1AA of the Assembly Square Development including an IKEA store and the construction of Assembly Square Drive was conditionally approved at the October 18th Planning Board Meeting. The IKEA store is anticipated to break ground in the Summer of 2008 and open in the Fall of 2009. "

As for the Orange Line, here's the latest I've seen, from Oct 2007:

I still love that "young adult" goes as old as 35. :)

Yeah, I walked by and saw the sign on Tuesday night (The Independent was closed... what's up with random private parties in the middle of the week?) and almost considered checking it out until I remembered that damn, I'll be 37 this year. What if I still feel like a young adult?
