I have read in various places "dry cleaners will accept metal hangers for reuse".

But I have not yet tried this with any specific dry cleaners. Have any of you?

Which dry cleaners in/around Davis do or do not welcome metal hangers to be dropped off?

Thanks!

I would not recommend giving them to Crawford's Cleaners. They totally flip out when you try. Good luck finding someone, though.

zoots will even give you a returnable wire hanger caddy. they give the hangers to goodwill. (Zoots is in Porter and is green -- perc-free)

ok smart guy, but how are you going to carry all those hangers without a specially-designed hanger caddy?

So why don't they, you know, reuse them? It's not like they become majorly contaminated in the course of keeping your clothes off the floor.

Anyway, both cleaners in Ball Square gladly take wire coat hangers.

I use Anton's and they take hangers back.

Thanks for the tip on Zoots being green.

I've been meaning to look into this for some time, as I have a large amount of drycleaning, and I really find boxed shirts kind of creepy.

Just FYI, there is an off chance that they may be recycled for you out of the trash. These days, any metal of value is stripped out of the solid waste stream and recycled before it reaches the landfill or incinerator.

I'm not advocating throwing them away, as obviously, directly reusing them is more environmentally friendly than having them melted down and remade into new hangars, just like reusable bags are better for the environment then recycling plastic bags.

I've been meaning to contact Somerville about how the solid waste is treated, and this may be my kick in the arse. I'll report back what I can find.
