Hello all. I'm looking for a dry cleaner in Somerville or surounding cities that will dry clean an infant's dress that is 42 years old. The dress is fragile and has incredible sentimental value. I'm willing to travel to ensure that the cleaner is top notch.

Thanks everyone! Happy New Year!!

i just acquired a big bag of used clothes, at various levels of grubbiness. can any of the local by-the-pound wash-n-fold places do a good job with cleaning this stuff? it includes a nice wool coat and probably some other items which would require special handling (for which i'm happy to pay extra), so some sorting and attention would be required.

thanks for any recs!

Over the past few months, I've been trying to find an inexpensive washer and drier. I've had several leads, but none of them have worked out.

I am on unemployment and cannot offer very much money, but will be happy to come and take working machines off your hands.

The easiest way to reach me is to send an email to my username at gmail dot com.

Thanks!

Davis Square Cleaners is closing, citing rent. Last day is March 31! If you have clothes there, best pick 'em in the next three days.

We've been going to the same dry cleaners for, er, more years than I really want to count right now, but have mostly managed to live our lives without needing to dry clean stuff more than every few months.

We suddenly find ourselves in need of clean ironed men's shirts on a 5-day-a-week basis, and I think I'd prefer to reduce our use of dry cleaning chemicals at this point .) I know there are a few places that use more eco-friendly dry cleaning stuff, but what about old fashioned *wet* cleaning? Are there any places who offer to launder cotton men's shirts in washing machines and then iron them so they look nice, or did the advent of dry cleaning completely kill that business model?

Apparently the Highland Laundromat near Davis Sq. closed some time within the past week or so--it looks as if the washers & dryers have been taken out, floors being ripped up, etc. One of the ladies at the antique store next door said that it had been bought by someone who owns 5 other laundromats in the area (sorry, no idea which ones), and that he would be renovating this one and reopening it at some point in the future; she had no idea of when that would be, however. Does anyone have any better idea of what's going on over there?

(Since Royal White closed a few years ago, I suppose this means that those of us who used this laundromat will have to go to the one in Ball Sq. or Gold Star further down Highland Ave. near the hospital; either way, I'm not looking forward to it. Not to mention that I'll miss the nice older Chinese couple who worked there... *sigh*)

Does anyone know where one might get a leather kilt cleaned around here? If you happen to know how much a comparable item would cost, that would be great, but I can always call around- I just need an idea of which cleaners are reputable.

I have a small (about 3x5) wool rug that needs cleaning. It's small enough that I could take it to a cleaning place; it feels silly to call out the sorts of cleaners that come to your house. It's a very special piece to me - hand-woven by Bedouin women in Jordan - so I want to be careful with it. Would dry cleaners be able to handle something like this?

I have a fur hat that is in dire need of cleaning before winter sets in. Can anyone recommend a place in the area where I could get this done? Thanks in advance!

This was posted on the West Somerville Neighborhood Association email list. Thought it might be useful to some of you:

I'm sure some people on this list lost clothes in the fire at the Hawk Cleaners
last October. Hawk Cleaners is refusing to pay claims for articles lost in the
fire or communicate with former customers, despite stating initially that they
had insurance for this. While I feel for them since their business was
destroyed, I'm upset that they are refusing to communicate or honestly discuss
their ability to pay claims.

If you are trying to get a claim paid, you need to file a request for mediation
via the MA AG's office. Its pretty easy to do via their website. Several people,
self included, have already done so. The AG's office will then refer your claim
to the MA Consumer's Counsel office in Cambridge. They can be reached @
617-349-6150. It is important to file a claim if you intend to get any money
back b/c if mediation by the Consumer's Counsel fails, they will provide some
guidance regarding how to file a suit in small claims court.

Thought I'd pass this along to anyone else trying to get reimbursed for clothes
lost in the fire.

We're getting married tomorrow and my future father in law forgot to pick up his suit at Davis Square Dry Cleaners on 237 Elm Street. They are obviously not open tomorrow.

Longest shot in the universe: does anyone have a way to contact them? Does anyone know the owner? Help us get in touch with them!! :(

That Teele Square fire this weekend will result in demolition of the building:
It soon spread to three other businesses: Nail Image salon, Kee Kar Lau Chinese restaurant, and Maria's Italian Cold Cuts. No one was hurt in the fire, but the single-story strip mall will have to be torn down, city spokeswoman Jacqueline Rossetti said.

I checked the old laundry posts but don't see what I'm looking for. I need to wash my comforter which won't fit in my washer or dryer. What laundry mat's in the area have oversized washers & dryers? I live near somerville hospital, but I'll go anywhere that is CLEAN and has big washers & dryers. THANKS!!!

Sorry, my phone is not allowing me to use the search function.

Looking for a local drycleaner that can do same day service of suits.

Any recommendation is much appreciated!

Thank you.

I usually think that having a relationship with people who provide intermittent services is a little overrated, but from the moment I first walked in to Skyline Drycleaner in Ball Square (across from the dueling breakfasteries), John made me feel welcome and valued. He knows me by sight, which is not terribly hard, but he knows my husband too.

They are open until 7pm on weekdays and also have a drop off chute. The VIP program is ridiculously easy to join and gets you a drop off bag and monthly billing. I get an emailed receipt when my clothes are processed and another when they are ready. Turnaround time is usually 1 day for normal things.

Men's shirts are $2.25 for laundry and pressing--we can't do them at home for that. All the other prices are reasonable. He has my wedding dress right now. (ETA: and he did a great job with it.)

They advertise pickup and delivery, but I haven't used it.

I would not mention this, but there's a groupon today, and if you haven't already got a regular dry cleaner, maybe this is the one for you. Ball Square, Broadway.

I checked the laundry tag and didn't see this specific question.

Several years ago I recall someone saying she used a laundry service that picked up the laundry bag(s) from her porch and dropped them back off on the porch later that day or the next day. This is not the same as dropoff/pickup, as in "haul bag to laundry where someone else washes it for me to pick up clean." (If I have to lug the bag then I might as well just put it in the machine myownself.) What I remember hearing about was actual door service.

Would anyone know if this is a service that still exists? I will be so happy if the answer is yes...

Hello all,

I have a question, an informal poll of sorts.

I'm at the beginning stages of remodeling my mother's house (she's not living there anymore). It's a two family home. The downstairs apt right now is a one bedroom.

Here's where your sage wisdom/expertise comes in:

I have the ability of making this space a nice, big, one bedroom apartment with a huge eat-in kitchen, large living room and bedroom; or I can take that "extra" room (the kitchen, believe it or not) and turn it into a second bedroom, and make a smaller galley-like kitchen, open to a common room/living room area, which, overall, would not be that big.

I know that it's difficult to visualize, and ultimately, it's my decision, but I"m just looking for what YOU ALL would be looking for in an apartment as a single renter, or with one other roommate.

As a single renter, is the kitchen important to you? The bigger the better? I know that kitchens in homes are massive these days, but do you all look for that in apartments too? Do you young'uns spend time in the kitchen like us old folk?

And, if you were to move in with someone else (have a roomate), how important is a larger kitchen for you? Do you consider the size of the living room/common space or are the bedrooms more important when sharing an apartment (these two bedrooms would be a good size).

Ok, I'm being redundant on both questions, just humor me.....

Also, in general, how important are laundry facilities on-site (ok, I think I know the answer to this one, but I'm throwing it out there as well...)??

Thanks in advance!

:D

ADDENDUM-DUM

Er... I know I should be asking a realtor this question, and I have fair idea, but what's the going rate these days for a large one bedroom apt close (VERY CLOSE) to Davis sq?????

After my miserable experience today hand washing my delicate laundry, I am quite prepared to pay somebody money to do this for me. Anybody happen to know of a local laundry that does this? I use North Cambridge Laundromat for wash-dry-fold, and asked them if they did hand wash, and Monica regretfully told me that they don't have the facilities to. Does anybody else in the area?

I called up the sewing machine store in Davis looking for this:

http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=75942&catid=142316&trx=CRT-PLST&trxp1=17008&trxp2=75942

but they do not have it. I don't want to pay $$ to have it shipped, when it really only costs a few dollars. Does anyone know where I could get one locally? It doesn't have to be this brand, just something that will remove the pilling from normal fabric (not just sweaters).

Thanks!

Which Dry cleaner in the Davis area do you guys prefer? I've been to Zoots in Porter before, but they take way too long and they are expensive. Any recommendations?
