purse theft at Joshua Tree

I found a purse with IDs and credit cards sitting in the middle of Cottage Ave. around 10:30pm tonight. Using LinkedIn, I was able to find the owner's phone number and returned the purse to her.

The purse had been stolen from Joshua Tree in what was believed to be a secure location sometime after 9pm and apparently dumped on the street with nothing more than a pack of cigarettes taken. The police asked the owner to call her banks to see if her card had been used before deciding whether to file a police report. This is just another reminder to watch out for sketchy suspects possibly using the back streets to make a getaway.

Why wouldn't she file a police report anyway. Regardless of whether her purse was recovered, it was stolen in the first place.

The officer actually suggested that course of action. I don't know what the protocol is, but I was surprised that no record of the theft was logged.

Incidentally, neither of the two police officers there had heard of LinkedIn which proved to be a useful resource of information.

Surely this should be reported to the police regardless of what was taken from the purse -- or even if nothing at all was taken.

Sorta related to all this crime we've been having for the last few weeks, on my ride through the city from Union Sq. to Tufts today I noticed at least 3-4 cars with windows smashed or glass laying on the street where most likely a car window had been smashed. This is along the main streets like Summer and Willow. I know this has been going on quite a bit lately but it looks to be about as bad I've ever seen around here. Btw my experience with the police here is that anything that gets them out of work is what they will recommend you do, so not filing will help them accomplish that goal.

She needs to file a police report. This has all the markings of a start at identity theft. She needs to get those cards reissued or cancelled PRONTO.
