My husband had it at McCormick and Schmick's when we went last month.

Haha, Franks is ridiculous. McCormicks is at least a little better. But yeah, its in Boston; one in Faneuil and one over by the Park Plaza.

I think that is in Boston right? I want something close to home :(

Ah. Well if you change your mind, I can vouch for the FOS at Brasserie Bouchee's and Stephanie's, both on Newbury.

Completely random drive-by post... Trader Joes has some delicious frozen french onion soups. :)

Uh - Maybe French Onion Soup purists will disagree, but I like it at Panera, which is kinda local if you have a car.

Or you're willing to ride the #77 bus on Mass. Ave. to the very end. It's across from Trader Joe's.

I had some good french onion soup at S&S the other night. That's in Inman, not far at all.

Yeah, I was going to suggest S&S as well. They do a pretty good French Onion soup.

I don't think it stands for anything; I've heard it sounds like "eat! eat!" in Yiddish: http://www.sandsrestaurant.com/

That's exactly what it stands for: es and es! Eat and eat! http://www.sandsrestaurant.com/story.htm

Johnny D's has it AND it's vegetarian (if that matters to you).

don't know if it's still on the menu and it's in Union Square, but The Independent has a decent French onion soup.

I had it there a few weeks ago on a very chilly evening and it was delicious.

if you want it done right...

If you have four or five hours to spare, there was a really good recipe in the last issue of Cook's Illustrated.

It's in the January & February 2008 issue of Cook's Illustrated (number ninety) with the painting of grapefruit on the cover. The recipe is on pages 12 and 13.

I really want to say that Christopher's in Porter has it on their menu, but their website doesn't list their soups at all.

I don't think they have it anymore.

They have it sometimes---it rotates on and off their menu.

I actually really, really liked the one at the Joshua Tree, but it's been years now ...

Au Bon Pain has one but it has to be the day they are making it.

I've tried to get it there, but they seem to forget to change the signs for what kind of soup's available.

Matter of fact, I've never had any sort of positive experience at the Davis Square Au Bon Pain, strangely. They always seem to be out of some key item (like cups, napkins, or lids).

Yeah, what is up with that? And everytime I go there the music is like laugh-out-loud awful. If it's that hard just put on some Vivaldi and be done with it!

I agree it's poorly run. When ordering a sandwich the person making it always takes their time like both of us have all day to kill.

I almost forget the place is there since it is not open at night. I've never understood why, since the Harvard Square au bon pain does lots of business late into the night.

I know. It's like the Davis Square one is for the laziest of lazy ABP employees.

Bartleys and Sandrines both have excellent ones. Sandrines is not cheap but it's *out of this world* good.

For other food recs in the Boston area I suggest searching the Boston board and chowhound.com.

Christophers often has vegetarian french onion soup, which is *amazing*, but it's not beef (if you care) and it's not all the time (more of a problem)
