Moving question

I'm moving this summer (probably cross-country from Somerville) and am starting to look around to see what the best way to do this would be. Does anyone know what the city policies are on moving "pods"? Or how long one can park a moving truck on the street? Any other suggestions would be great! I'm going to grad school so am looking for cheap and have more stuff then will fit in a car.

I recently moved back here using pods, but I had access to a driveway to drop them in for the unloading period. I'd have driven myself, except it was winter, but the pods were a really really easy way to get things from there to here. I used ABS Upack, after seeing some really good recommendations for them, and was quite happy. They also have relatively small pods compared to some other pod-shippers.

When I moved away from Somerville a few years ago, I loaded a trailer; I called the city and got some temporary parking permit things that I put up on the street to reserve parking space for the trailer/truck. I don't recall what the time limit was, though.

You need to get a permit from the city inspectional service. Call 311 for more details.

The permit is good for one week, although you can get extensions.

They said there was a $50 fee, but then when we went to pick it up they didn't charge us. Apparently the fee is for the parking office -- if you need a "do not park" sign that costs $50 a week? In any case, we didn't have to pay.

Someone had a permit from the city to park a pod in front of my building last week, so it's definitely possible.

i used upack and was satisfied. it was more affordable than any other option.

you can make it cheaper by $250 on one end or both ends by driving your stuff out to the upack warehouse (near braintree), assuming you have friends to help you do that.

while the somerville people will issue a permit and allow you to park your pod on the street, the upack people will tell you that it is not allowed. apparently all of mass has a law saying no street-storage-units? in any case, they will tell you that you have a certain amount of time (like a few hours) to empty the pod and the driver can't help. we did this, because we had a few movers helping us (i have a lot of heavy boxes).

if you want cheap, hardworking, help for moving, we have a name and number to suggest. i can't find the number right now but i will comment here when i find it.
