Last night after slurping down two delicious medium sized bud-lites over at Mike's pizza, my boyfriend wanted to go home. In an effort to tire me out and or change his mind, we bought some lottery tickets for the big bucks lottery and returned one movie. I still wanted more. I told him that I'd be happy to head over to my new favorite bar, solo, if he wanted to go home to watch the same ol' on CNN. So there it was. I knew I'd be welcomed by whom ever was tending the bar, offered a nice dirnky-poo and maybe some delicious bar snacks... However, when I skipped and slid on over there, up the steps and walkway, I noticed a hand written sign on the door and lights off. "Closed for renovations," the sign read... Hm. I guess it was just too good to be true. La Spina seems to be "Closed for Renovations." Where do I go now?

I don't know if it's been mentioned before on davis_square, since it's a good hike outside of Davis, but I highly recommend Highland Kitchen! It's just past Central St on Highland Ave. Drinks and food are fantastic, and definitely worth the trip. Try the spicy coconut goat curry stew if they have it. (There, did that get your attention? ;)

In journalism, what you did here is called "burying the lede". The important part of your post is that La Spina is closed, but most readers will never get that far.

Seriously. They lost me at "delicious medium sized bud-lites."

ya - that gave me pause, esp. in a restaurant tip...

passed Rosebud/Spina the other day and some workers were replacing the Spina sign with a Rosebud sign. Maybe Rosebud expand into it.

Never went to La Spina but I liked the place that was there before it.

For years and years, they were talking about expanding Rosebud into that space. There isn't much for me to eat at Rosebud so I don't go there often, but I do enjoy their grilled artichoke hearts. And they mix a mean drink -- no skimping on the alcohol.

And what you've done here I would call a bit condescending.

Possibly. But worth doing, nevertheless.

I'd call it necessary, myself.

I think it's a cardinal act of mercy, considering how inane the post was.

So...you drink Bud Lites, play the lottery and don't care whether or not your boyfriend does things with you.

Was there a point buried in here? Oh wait. Ron pointed it out. La Spina is closed? That's a bummer. Thanks for fleshing that out, Ron!

I only went to La Spina once, but I was so very unimpressed that it was never going to be more than once. Food was bland, missing various components listed on the menu, and took an insane amount of time to arrive. Meanwhile we were given mediocre bread to dip in an oil so flavorless it could have been canola. The dishes were our third choices because they were out of choices one and two (also, the first wine we tried to order). Now, if it had been late Sunday this would be not unexpected. But it was 6pm on a Friday. If you're out of many things at that point, something is seriously wrong. There were also maybe six people there, tops, by the time we left at ~8pm on a Friday! Definitely a restaurant that didn't seem long for this world.
