Mass Farmers Markets is excited to announce the creation of a Davis Square "Friends of the Market" group for 2008! If you live, work, or shop in Davis Square, we'd love to have you join!

A Friends Group is a collection of private citizens who form a grassroots group that provides advice and volunteer/financial support to their local Farmers Market. A Friends group encourages businesses, civic organizations, and individuals to volunteer their time and talents to enhance their community Farmers Market. Friends will provide advocacy, promotion, and supplemental funds to make the market a local treasure.

If you think you may be interesting in attending a monthly meeting and helping out with various Davis Square farmers market promotions, please e-mail me at volunteer@massfarmersmarkets.org to get in the loop. This is a new venture, and we hope to expand the "Friends Group" to more markets in the future. There are no membership dues to become a Friend, just your enthusiasm and good ideas!

At this point we are just figuring out what the interest level is - so please contact me if you're interested! - and we'll announce a meeting place and time shortly.

Thanks very much,
Karin Turer

I'm pretty busy, so I'm not quire ready to commit to monthly meetings/another volunteer project, but I'd definitely want to be kept up-to-date (with an ear open for small ways I can help out) with a mailing list for the group or something along those lines.

I'll think about it, but in the meantime, I noticed that in one of the meeting notes about a possible hotel in Davis Square the Day Street parking lot was described as underutilized or surplus or something like that. This bothers me, since I think the vibrant community around the farmer's market is very much using that parking lot thank you.

That's a concern for me, too. If the parking lot is built on, the farmer's market needs another home in Davis Square.

I always thought they were talking about the parking lot on the *other* side of the street, behind the new gym/cvs building.

The hotel study listed both lots as possible sites.
