I just made a reservation at Masa in the South End for a Friday night of RW at 8:30pm, and had no problem getting a reservation, even though they are usually pretty busy.
During summer RW, I went to Tangierino's in Charlestown... one of my favorite restaurants in general, though usually pretty pricey. Portions are smaller than normal during RW, but they still had my favorite things on the menu-- the tangines are excellent, as is the Mendoubia salad.
And as a bonus, there's a hookah bar attached if you're into that sort of thing.
I hear that Evoo in our very own Somerville still has some spots available. I am going there on Thursday so I can't yet vouch for them, but I hear that it's great.
I used http://www.restaurantweekboston.com/ to make a reservation for Stix. You have to sign up for a free table reservation service, but if you keep your reservation you can earn points for dining vouchers. I have never eaten here, but I have wanted to go since they were featured in Stuff at Night. They have this jello shot sashimi thing that looks like sushi but it really alcohol gelatin goodness, which they serve as a dessert. I doubt it is on the restaurant week menu, but I am going to order it anyway!
If you can still get in, my alltime favorite RW experiences have been Lumiere (in Newton, sorry) and Aquitaine (Back Bay). Although, I've never actually eaten off the RW menu at Aquitaine. hmmm. Also excellent is Davios (Park Place), and I've heard fabulous things about Blue in Kendall.
I was very disappointed with RW at Blue Room in Kendall about two years ago. I was at Aquitaine for RW last summer, and it was pretty good.
I don't know if you can get a truly outstanding dining experience during the restaurant week. Though, my favorite part is that there is a mandatory dessert :).
If you want a fine dining place and can grab a reservation, Meritage is amazing, as is Excelsior. I've had good experiences at both during RW. Grotto in Beacon Hill lets you choose from their whole menu.
My favorite places, including Aura and Hammersley's, no longer participate. I would think that there are probably still a lot of options for lunch?
