a friend who lives on west street just outside of davis posted this to a list we're both on. i thought i'd seek further data here:

I am trying to figure out the parameters of a power spike/fallout that occurred at 7:30 in Somerville this evening. Rumor says that there was the sound of an explosion and that the spike reached as far as Concord MA.

So,,, Did you have a spike or a power failure? Did you hear an explosion? And what is your physical location?

Me:
Somerville: momentary spike/drop, no explosion (there was a lot of noise of equipment switching so it might have been masked)

further reports have included Concord, Belmont, Milton, Methuen, and Leominster.

i experienced this, and i live two blocks from Somerville Hospital.

There are two big threads about this on the b0st0n community. All within 495 and beyond. I was at a 99 in Charlestown during it and I didn't notice anything -- except that satellite TV broadcasting the Bruins game lost signal for about 5-10 seconds at one point.

Yep, we had a momentary power blip tonight. Took down both our servers but I don't think there was lasting damage.

I was having dinner in Central Square (Cambridge), and we noticed the dip; a couple of people, all of whom lived in Cambridge or Somerville, noticed machines go offline. Looking at uptime, my router machine at home in Ten Hills also rebooted, so the power event must have hit here too.

Add in Arlington and Malden as locations that got brief blackouts. The MIT machine room in Cambridge may have been hit, too.

My bf and I were driving somewhere around Harvard Square/Central Square and all the street and traffic lights went out for a second; the traffic lights went to flashing yellow for a minute before going back to green.

It was around 7:30 or so. It must be related...

I was at South Station and the lights went out there. It was rather odd.

Ah, so that's what happened. Was out at my sister's house in Lincoln and the power faded almost to nil for a second or so. Came home (to Cherry St) and the answering machine had forgotten what time it was and my computer was down.

I was in Orleans in Davis Square and noticed a flickering power outage in the place, lasted about a second or so. Didn't have a watch on me, but 7:30 pm sounds about right.

Lexington, too. I just figured it was a local blip, until I saw this thread.

And how.
