I was wondering if there was anyone who would be willing to teach me? I will trade a lunch in Davis for your experience.

Thanks!!

I added a tag that may lead you to other folks with the same interest. The West Branch Library has a knitting group every Monday night, 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

learning in person is the best, but if you want to learn a bit online (or brush up), knittinghelp.com is an AWESOME resource.

I will second the shit out of this! knittinghelp.com was how I got started. Then I followed it up with a lesson at Mind's Eye, as [livejournal.com profile] cosmicgarden mentions. Now, I have, like, four projects.

Wow, knitting is totally becoming cool!

Go ask [livejournal.com profile] knittingkumquat! She is great at both, and looking for students!

I could teach you some basic crocheting stitches. Would you want to learn blanket stitches or small doily and lace-type stuff?

I'm a notoriously terrible teacher, but I second the comment about knittinghelp.com. You should definitely check out the library group that was mentioned (and also see what books they have. Debbie Stoller's Stitch and Bitch was my first book), and any other local knitting groups you can find online.

I go to a knitting group in Union Square (Bloc 11, Thursday nights @ 7:00ish). We're all already experienced knitters, but surrounding myself with people who could help me once I got the basic knit stitch down was very helpful when I was trying to learn. Then again, on top of being a notoriously terrible teacher, I'm also not great with one-on-one things :) and you might learn differently.

This is from the City's web site. No dates are listed, so if interested, I would give them a call:

i think they also do a "stitch and bitch" wednesdays from 630pm on... that may have changed, though, so you might want to check in with them.

I got the basics from one of the knitting kits at michaels. The kits include a book and everything but yarn. It worked pretty well. I wasn't able to learn from people until I was able to make a square.

You might want to figure out what kinds of things you want to make before figuring out which technique you want to learn. Crochet seems to be better for things that go in circles, and knitting is better for things that go in straight lines, if easier is better. Also what kind of coordination you're better at. I look at crochet and go "Ack! So many knots to learn?" and crocheters have looked at my knitting and said "Ack! Two needles?!"

I can both crochet and knit and would be willing to teach. And yes, Spark still does the Weds. Stitch'n'Bitch, you just have to check that week to make sure as it's sometimes canceled in favor of classes.

It looks like you have lots of resources to choose from now, but I'll add one more. At 22 White Street in Cambridge (across from Shaw's @ Porter Square) is a shop called Mind's Eye Yarns (617-354-7253, www.mindseyeyarns.com). I just wandered in there last week with a friend, and they handed me a flier saying they have a Weds. 7-9pm knitting group, plus lessons by appointment for $12 for a 45-minute lesson. I'm not crafty myself, but they had some very pretty yarns... tempting.

crochet the great barrier reef

If ever there was a reason to learn basic crochet, it would be to contribute to this project:

Crocheting the Great Barrier Reef

Check out all the links in the left column.
They are holding crochet workshops around the country, I think, and anyone can send in something, kind of like the AIDS quilt.

-- or learn to crochet with plastic bags and contribute to the crocheted Great Garbage Patch (real name, and its floating in the ocean near Hawaii, made up of all our disgusting plastic throwaway bags and bottles)
