I've read through the memories and put myself on Dr. Cook's waiting list, but since I really probably should see a dentist something before 2010...does anyone have recommendations for the second-most-awesome dentist in the area?

I second Karen Bright, she's really nice and I've never had a problem there.

Dr Mo at OmniDentix. it's in the Meadow Glen Mall right on Rte 16.
it being in a mall is weird, yes, but he is incredible and the whole office is efficient as hell.

I highly recommend Dr. Daniel Roseman on Highland Avenue (between Lowell and Central, just past the Little Sisters) as the most awesome dentist ever! He is accomodating, gentle, informative, and cautious (doesn't perform a procedure unless it's absolutely necessary). He's the best dentist I've ever met (and I'm dentist-phobic!).

I heart Dr. Dobrin and Dr. Izedian at Dental Arts Associates on College Ave. They're friendly, informative, open, and have awesomely convenient hours. The hygienists are also great (especially Lynne), as are the desk staff. I've been a patient there since I moved to Somerville 7 years ago -- the longest doctor-patient relationship of my life, by far.

has that office moved?

I am also desperately seeking dentist, so I Googled for "Dental Arts Associates Somerville MA." Their website states they're on Highland Ave (#396) now?

Also, do you get any vibes from them on their collective attitude on oral piercings? I know my risks--better than most dentists, I'd wager--and I refuse to take attitude from any doctor or dentist. If they're going to cop a 'tude, I might as well not waste my time.

Nope, it hasn't moved -- I just lack geography-brain today. :)

And I don't have any oral piercings, so it's never come up... but I can't imagine them having 'tude about anything. My experience is that they'll be up-front about any concerns they have about your mouth, but in a totally reasonable, easy-going way.

Thanks! As long as they're not jerk-faces about things, I'm fine to get along, but I've had some rather bad experiences with docs in the past so I try to vet new medical establishments with care.

Woah, if I'd done a little searching, I would have found their "policy statement" (my quotes) regarding oral piercing:

"Oral piercing (usually on the tongue or around the lips) is one of the more disturbing fashion trends in recent years."

Okay, so maybe I'll not to disturb them with my business or money.

In fairness, their *full* statement is rather measured, for something coming from the medical profession, and I guess I'm glad to have it up front. Lets me make a more informed decision.

I can recommend my dentist, who I have only recently found after many years of searching for a good dentist. He is Dr. Khoury at Kappa Dental in Somerville. He is the most gentle, quiet, patient, and skilled dentist I have found. He is also on the faculty at BU, so he knows his stuff.

I recently google-stalked him and found out he also does free or low-cost dental work for kids who can't afford dental care. Besides a couple of dental degrees, he has a masters in public health.

After getting on Dr. Cook's waiting list and also needing to go earlier, I went to Dr. Paul Schick in Davis. He took about ten minutes to clean my teeth and quoted me some outrageous prices for cavities. I was out of the office in a half an hour. I haven't had a cleaning that was that short, let alone a cleaning, x-rays, and first-time consultation.

Concerned, I went to see Dr. Parrella down the street. It was absolutely wonderful. They were thorough, nice, and professional. If you can get an appointment, go to Dr. Parrella, hands down-- (617) 625-3022.

I decided to go with the above recommendation and went to Parella and was hugely disappointed.

Now, I'm pretty regular at the dentist and the three dentists I've had before have done the usual cleaning and filling routine. So here was the Parella approach:

- *NO* cleaning the first time, instead an "evaluation" and recommendation for a deep clean that would cost me $250 after insurance
- Oral surgeon recommendation to have my wisdom teeth removed (even though they're causing me no problems, touch wood)
- A bacterial culture that apparently indicated a bacteria that the doctor recommended I treat with antibiotics
- Basically ignored a problem I was reporting ("I don't see anything right now")

When I finally did meet Parella (I was wondering if I'd see him at all after an hour and a half with the hygenist) he stayed for about 30 seconds and vanished before I could ask him any questions leaving the hygenist to interpret his hurried commentary.

Today, I went to Paul Shick at Somerville Dental down the street and had a great experience. Cleaning was done in twenty minutes and I thought he was thorough. Listened to my one complaint and quickly diagnosed a cavity under an old filling and spotted another one that was just starting. In all, done in about a half hour and going back in a couple of weeks for a filling. Thank goodness!
