We have had some arrangements fall through and now we need to find a  Day Care provider for our beautiful baby girl starting in June.

Does anyone know somebody that does infant day care or a center that might have an opening in June? We are interested in the Somerville \ Cambridge area but would consider anything else that is close.

Thank you all so much!

I'm in the same boat and have had no success in finding something affordable and available in the area. It's to the point now where we're considering my s/o to be a stay at home dad.

Sadly, no.

Daycare

My son went to the Maria West family daycare, which is just wonderful. It's not too likely that they have an opening in June, but you never know. Someone might move or something. It never hurts to ask.

Macky Buck and Michael Rome also run an amazing family daycare in Cambridge. Same for them about openings, though. They're in pretty high demand. Both of these daycares are run by people who really care about early childhood development. Both are play-based and the kids spend a lot of time outdoors, rain or shine. They also both have groups of kids from infants to 5 years old.

Hi inkarn8,

Are you on the Somerville Moms yahoo group? If not, you should join; you can post your question there and look up in the archives for recent posts re: infant daycare.

My daughter is at West Family Daycare (Maria West's place), and there are no openings for June, and none for Sept 2008-Aug 2009 at this time. (How old is your baby? WFDC age minimum is 1 year, anyway)

Send me a PM, I can give you info on my daughter's first daycare, she was there from 18M-2.5 yrs; it's in Medford near MG Mall. They take infants.

This community's profile page has a link to Somerville Moms, as well as to a second Yahoo list called Somerville Parents.

Somerville Parents is geared more toward people with school-age kids; for infant/toddler type questions SomervilleMoms is a better bet.

Three months is tough, and short notice is even tougher. There's a big break at 15 months between infants and toddlers, and it's much easier to find daycare for the latter. You might try some of the daycare "chains" as they have a lot of centers close by and may have a few open spots. At least some of the Bright Horizons (www.brighthorizons.com) centers (Cambridge, Watertown, Boston) take infants as young as six weeks, but I'm not sure which ones. The Kindercare (http://www.kindercare.com/our-centers/center-details/303005/) right next to the Davis T, and A place to grow (http://superpageshosting.com/aplacetogrowchildcarecom/) in Arlington and Belmont do infants too, I think. Our kids were both at Bright Horizons as infants and it was good for one, and not so good for the other...

Good luck and call around to see who has space. While you're at it, remember that you don't have to keep your kid in the same place until kindergarten. If you see a center that's full, or a place you like that is 15 mos. and up, get on the waiting list and you can always switch. Our 17 month old handled the transition to a new center very well.

You may want to get on wait lists for area preschools, pronto. Three months is kind of rough, good luck. Both Trickettes went to Mulberry (predecessor to whatever's right by the T now, not on my radar screen anymore), which was fine, but nothing special.

However - I know it sounds early but I'm firmly convinced that if we hadn't signed up our youngest before my wife went back to work, she wouldn't have gotten into preschool at Tufts Educational Day Care ("behind" the parking office, off Hollard). So you may want to look into that as well...

What's the deal with that Tufts pre-school? I requested an information packet twice and never received it. Are you very pleased with it?

Totally pleased, but a little puzzled as to why they wouldn't have been sending information out.

Try stopping by during the day if it's at all possible.

I wouldn't guess you'd have any luck with Kindercare; their infant room seems quite crowded at the moment.

my favorite 2 year old has been going to one on Highland Ave between Davis & Cedar since infancy and is very happy there.
(I think it is Bright Horizons? there is a rainbow above the door and it is behind a bank or real estate place, just opposite Cherry St.) don't know if they have openings, but it is worth a look.

I'm guessing you are not the parent of your favorite 2-year-old? :)

Would you consider a nanny or nanny-share? (or maybe that's what fell through in the first place)
SomMoms has had several recent posts from moms recommending nannies looking for work.

Although its not too convenient to Davis, we've sent both our kids to the TSC Child Care Center at the Volpe Center in Kendall Square. Its relatively large so there are sometimes openings, although infant spots can always be tough. Its best if you are flexible about starting part time, because you can then be first in line when a fulltime spot opens up (I think - we actually sent both kids 3-4 days a week.) I think its fine for infants, OK for toddlers. We sent out oldest to a different preschool, though, because its really more of a daycare center than a school.

TSC is near the Kendall Square T station. Cost is high, but less than Bright Horizons and its ilk.

I found a great family daycare for my infant from the Massachusetts EEC Website: http://www.eec.state.ma.us/. It's a list of licensed providers; you'll have to call folks on the list to see if they have availability

Go to: Childrens-Village.net

It's right in Fresh Pond and has a HUGE (over 10,000SF) play yard. It's been around for nearly 40 years and has some pretty great staff, most who have been there over 10 years with some as long as 27 years!

I just wondered if you were still looking for a someone to care for your baby girl? I am an RN with over 20 years experience in healthcare. My last 3 years in the hospital were in a Neonatal ICU and then I did night shift home care for babies and infants with extreme medical conditions in their homes for 4 years full & part time. At this time, I am interested in providing childcare in my home on a weekday (working) schedule for 1 baby/infant. I am flexible in the hours and would even consider over nights as this is the shift that I did while I did home care nursing. I am available to care for an infant age newborn to 14 months with at least a one year committment on my part. I am only accepting one infant for full-time care so your child would have devoted attention. The only exception that I would make would be newborn twins. My long-term goals are to open my own advanced care pediatric homecare company and I am working on the foundation work of starting a corporation. Many references available upon request regarding my infant care excellence. I will take care of your baby the way that you want your baby taken care of. Breastmilk feedings, caloric enhanced feedings, preterm infants are not a problem. Rates are negotiable. I know that childcare cost are outrageous and I am not looking to make anywhere near daycare rates. I am located right off Magoun Square and the location would perfect for Tufts employee or other central Somerville resident. I would consider doing a pick-up and drop-off service in the right situation. I would also be able to provide services such as doing all the babies laundry and formula prep and bottle filling for a 24 hour period.
Available beginning July 12th with no vacation plans for the next year at this time. My home would be available for a visit after July 6 as some remodeling is being finished. My home is non-smoking. If there is anyone else interested in my service, please feel free to contact me.
Feel free to email me with any questions or requests.
Sincerely, Cheryl

I would be interested in your services. I wouldn't need day care until September. I am expecting in July.

Now What?

Just found out that the nanny we spent so much time finding has opted not to take the job. Curious if anybody has any suggestions concerning day care options starting in November. Daughter is 10 weeks old today. We're in Union Square, Somerville. We were looking at care in our home, but looks like we're not going to figure that out in two weeks.
