Good retail space open in West Medford Square

Hey. If anyone is or knows a Davis Square (or other square) small business owner who is doing very well and thinking about opening another location, a prime property right in the heart of West Medford Square just opened. Or perhaps an adventurous entrepreneur looking to open their first location. The Shore Pharmacy right there on High St. closed and I don't know that it has been claimed by a new business yet. Although it doesn't have anywhere near the bustle of Davis, West Medford Square has good potential for the right business. Several shops and small food places have been doing solidly well there and the upscale Bistro 5 seems to be doing very well.  The right small business in that spot might be a catalyst for a domino effect for a more vibrant West Medford Square.

I'd be a little concerned about why the Johnnie's Foodmaster supermarket there failed and was eventually replaced by a Brooks (now Rite Aid) drug store.

I'm not a business owner. Just someone who'd like to see improvements such as this made to West Medford. As far as Johnnie's- hard to say why they were replaced by Brooks. Wouldn't a corporate entity such as Brooks moving in rely on their belief in a certain potential for retail traffic? maybe not "hip" traffic, but I think right now West Medford is perhaps just a little under-served in the cafe, offbeat shop, interesting independent restaurant department. As there is now a decent population of "newer" people with such tastes, plus if W. Medford became a little more of a "destination", people might come from Arlington, Winchester and Somerville to patronize certain businesses, as happens specifically with Bistro 5. As far as the Green Line being a great catalyst for improvement I agree with you 1000%. Join the Medford Neighborhood Green Line Alliance http://www.medfordgreenline.org/ and start making your voice heard on that issue!

Johnnie's was closed only because the building owner chose not to renew their lease and had received a significantly better offer from Brooks than Johnnie's could have ever possibly been able to afford.

That is really disappointing to hear. I went to Shore Drugstore whenever I needed convience-store items when I lived in West Medford, and it was a staple of the community.
Oh, well.
