FOUND: cat
Apr. 19th, 2008 01:54 pmFound on the corner of Winchester and Newbern (strictly speaking, Ball Square but i see no Ball Square group. Cross posted to West Medford mailing list,
somervillemass and my LJ at large, and tomorrow i'll get Somerville Alleycat Advocats notified):
6-8 month old young calico female cat. Quite friendly and in good health, scared but otherwise fine. May have been shut in our basement by accident for 2-3 days, so since Thursday or so.
We have no time to post flyers tonight, but will do so tomorrow (Sunday 20 April). If you think you know whose cat this is, post a comment here and notify them that she's fine. We aren't home tonight, hence the inability to post flyers just yet. If anyone has a lead on whose cat this is we will be in touch tomorrow during the day.

Date: 2008-04-20 01:00 pm (UTC)I have an outdoor cat who is very chatty with people who walk by and on occassion will follow people for a house or two meowing. One time someone thought she was lost because of this behavior and brought her home and postered the neighborhood -- even though she had just been let out about an hour earlier. When my roommate went to go pick her up, my cat immediately jumped out her arms and ran home.
So, the moral of this story is -- are you certain this cat is lost? Even if she was locked in your basement, it may be worth feeding her and sending her on her way. Cats are pretty good at finding their way home.

Date: 2008-04-20 01:15 pm (UTC)But if i'm wrong, what then? She has no collar - most outdoor cats are collared for safety and identification.
I feel it is more responsible to keep her and post flyers than to take the chance that she will not find her family. It is not an easy choice, but it is what i would want a family to do if one of mine got out, or if one of my outdoor cats (when i lived places safe enough that i could do that) slipped their collar and was found.
And lastly, it's what Advocats taught their foster families to do, so it's what we do.
But thanks for the suggestion :)

Date: 2008-04-20 02:12 pm (UTC)That being said, I appreciate you taking in this cat, and posting here, because if my dumbell cat fell out the window when I wasn't home, I'd like to think if he went wandering, someone would scoop him up before he got ran over by a car or starved under a bush.

Date: 2008-04-20 05:55 pm (UTC)I got a phone call from the family who has been feeding the little girl. She's been living in their back yard for about 4 months now but has never allowed herself to be touched or approached. They have seen her outside in all sorts of nasty weather, and are completely convinced she is homeless. Now that she has been contained they definitely want to keep her, and we talked about techniques to introduce her to their existing cat. If it goes poorly, they have my number and i can take her back at any time.
I figured the flyers would have more effect than the posting but i wanted to cover all my bases. Yay happy ending :)
