This morning when I was walking to work I noticed that one of my hanging baskets of pansies was missing from our first floor porch. I didn't see it anywhere nearby and nobody else in our building has confiscated it for any reason. We have a wrap around porch and live at the corner of Powder House and Leonard which, admittedly, is right across from Tufts so it is possible that my flowers are chillin' in a dorm room across the street. Out of curiosity has anyone else had anything like this swiped?

I tagged this "crime" and "gardening". If you click on the latter tag, you'll see a couple of earlier reports of plant thefts in 2007 and 2005.

Gardening crimes could be so very many things... planting plastic flowers instead of real ones... Trespassing to plant bushes in the dead of the night to beautify the neighborhood...

On a quiet street in Winter Hill, in the middle of the night, someone pulled up and swiped our big beautiful pots of flowers (this in 2005). It's a very typical spring crime and very disheartening. As with any crime, petty or not, call 311 to log the incident. This information helps the SPD make choices about where to send patrols, etc.

After the first time my potted pansies disappeared from my front stoop I smeared the outside of the pot with vaseline. Since then my pots are still where I put them.

I love this idea. Do you have problems with bugs, etc. getting stuck to the pots?

It gets a little grimy, but doesn't seem to bother the bugs.

That's brilliant! :)
unfortunately, the times my plants have been stolen have been within days of planting and the whole plant was easily ripped out, whether they were in the ground or pots.

I had a planter stolen from the head of my driveway last summer. And this winter, I had a garbage can stolen from the side of my house. Someone actually took the garbage bags out of the garbage can and left them, before absconding with the can.

yup. i live on pearson (not that far from you) and last summer, had a bunch of lanterns stolen off our porch (they were WIRED on, too - they snipped the wires to get them!) i figured it was probably drunken college students, and never put anything on value out on the porch again, which is sad, but probably necessary

Last year on 4th of july I came home to find my porch swing had the pillow seat stolen. I assume someone stole it on the way to the fireworks to have something to sit on :/ Never had flowers stolen though.

I've had blossoms clipped from plants in my garden (which is on a major street with a lot of foot traffic) and a few plants uprooted (and left) as a prank.
