A couple of weeks past at the Whole Foods at Alewife, I saw a display of those Sigg metal bottles, and it put me in mind to buy one for a friend's birthday. Of course I went there today and there was not a one to be found.

Something in me feels like a bad shopper for not being able to think of a place to buy these locally, and it feels hypocritical to buy a crazy trendy environmental bottle online where I'll have to pay for shipping (moreover, since I need it preferably this week for the gift.)

Can anyone point me to a different local vendor? I can go into Boston, and I do have a car, but of course I'd prefer the general Camberville area for convenience factor.

Head over to Greenward, 1776 Mass Ave downstairs. Their # is 617.395.1338.

They are awesome, and they've got the Siggs in a bunch of different sizes.

in addition to the aforementioned Greenward, REI (http://www.rei.com/) carries Sigg bottles. They have an awesome store (http://www.rei.com/stores/80) over in Landmark Center behind Fenway Park (MBTA D-line to Fenway, or 10 minute walk from Kenmore Square, or 47 bus from Central Square in Cambridge).

I'm pretty sure they also have Siggs at Eastern Mountain Sports in Harvard Square, a quick 5-minute T ride from Davis.

call before you shop. there is a huge sigg shortage in cambridge due to the news on nalgene plastic being cancerous (i'm totally serious). my friend went to buy one earlier this week and got nearly the last one.

Curious: How do those differ from the metal containers, of similar form-factor, that have been sold for decades in camping stores as stove-fuel containers?

I'm not sure exactly, but the canteens that we used when I was young always left a metallic taste in my mouth. Water from Sigg bottles has not metallic taste. Sigg won't say what materials they use to make their proprietary bottle liner, but they claim the liner is resistant to any leaching.

I'd be willing to bet that the lining of Sigg bottles, as with most lined metal containers, is some kind of polyethylene derivative, since polyethylene can be made to be odorless and tasteless, it's thought to be safe (most plastic packaging for beverages is some kind of polyethylene and it's also used to line aluminum cans - which would corrode and leak if they weren't lined) and it's pretty cheap. As others have alluded, the Sigg bottles have been around for a long time. I guess they've recently become much more popular though.

I should think they would have them at the camping store on Mass. Ave. but they're not open on Sunday.

Educate me - how is this different from any number of Nalgene or Nalgene type water bottles you can find all over? I'm peripherally aware of the BHP "controversy" (inconclusive data and all), but there are a number of similar bottles that don't use BHP.

Not knocking this particular bottle - just honestly want to know what's so special about it.

BHP? Err - I meant BPA.
