ok, so last night i couldn't fall asleep and maybe a few minutes before 3am i heard what i think might have been 3 shots fired...does anyone know anything about this?   it was really loud.  i waited and didn't hear any sound after...no yelling, no sirens.  i'm not sure if it occured on my street or a block or 2 over or if it was anything at all.  it would have been somewhere around simpson, irving and wallace.

it was scary, but hopefully it was nothing.  thanks in advance if you have any info about this.

If they were loud "thud" sounds, they probably were large firecrackers. If they were more "hollow" sounds that ended in a higher pitch, they were probably gunshots. I'm near Union, so I couldn't hear them.

I heard those too. I'm on Burnham, and it sounded like they were in the back yard, it was so loud. It definately woke me up.

Probably either firecrackers or backfires.

Well, I know they've gotten rarer, but there are still plenty of cars on the road without fuel injection or computers controlling the fuel mix.

I am at the corner of Packard and Electric, and definitely heard three gunshots. From the sound of it they were fairly far away and maybe coming from the WSW.

"definitely heard three gunshots"

I think you meant to say "sounds that might have been gunshots." The entire reason this is being posted at all is because most folks don't seem to know what real gunshots sound like.

And I'm probably one of those. An electric transformer next door used to blow up regularly, causing power outages and emitting sounds that I describe as "like gunshots".

There's nothing *wrong* with people not knowing what it sounds like (in fact, living in a world where nobody has to know seems like a pretty good thing to me). It's simply a very different thing to assert "I heard three gunshots" than it is to say "I heard three loud bangs."

Most people probably get their idea of "what gunshots sound like" from movies and TV shows, or from the blank rounds that are fired in events like the Patriots Day parade.

Maybe I am a ballistics expert?

Seeing as how I am not I will rephrase. I heard what sounded to me like 3 gunshots followed by complete silence.

No Incident Report Was Filed

Firecrackers/M80s/cherry bombs highly likely.

Had they determined that shots were fired, either for no apparent reason or in connection with another crime, the police would have filed an incident report. I checked, and no such report was filed.

If folks have any information about the incident that suggest that it warrants further investigation, they should call the non-emergency police number, 617-625-1600,

And please don't hesitate to call 911 right away if you believe you've heard gunshots.

Though that usually happens only in hot weather when the electric grid is straining to handle peak load from air conditioners and refrigerators.

There was some kind of electrical grid crisis yesterday, though--they were talking about it on the radio.

Last time I heard something like that, it turned out to be a drug raid by police, and the loud bangs were from flash-bang grenades. That was near Gilman Square a couple years ago or more.

And that episode, staged with a full SWAT team and a safety perimeter, generated a loooong incident report.

Yep. My boyfriend had just come home from Iraq not long before, and almost had a heart attack when we heard the bangs. We called 911, not knowing what was going on, and they basically said, "Ok, thanks!" and hung up. It was only when we didn't hear any more bangs for a good while that we were willing to go look out the windows to see what was going on, and then it made a bit more sense.

If it were actually gun shots and instead of anybody calling the police to report them everybody who heard them (except the dead victim and the perpetrator) instead wrote about it in LJ, then did a crime really happen?

No.

I know because of my learnings.
