Swing Dancing in Davis Square?
May. 15th, 2008 06:17 pmI'm a swing dancer (lindy hop, blues, etc) and I say there should be a free, weekly swing dance in Davis Square. Perhaps each Friday afternoon, early evening, or saturday afternoon, or perhaps Sunday morning? All that would be needed is a boombox that can be turned up relatively loudly and a few couples who like to dance.
Perhaps some of us who are more experienced could teach a lesson during the event?

Date: 2008-05-16 02:32 am (UTC)Monday nights near Harvard Sq (http://fiveguysnamedmike.org)
Wednesday nights at MIT (http://web.mit.edu/swing/)
Most Fridays in Central Sq (http://bostonswingcoop.org/)
And if there's dancing in Davis Sq, maybe I should go to that too. I could bring an iPod full of tunes.

Date: 2008-05-16 11:32 am (UTC)- Swing City (http://swingcityboston.com/index.shtml) between Porter & Inman Square. The Love Dogs are playing tonight
- Boston Swing Central (http://www.bostonswingcoop.org/) in Central Square. The Back Bay Rhythm Makers are playing tonight
- Swing Dance Depot (http://www.swingdancedepot.com/)in Watertown. Roger Ceresi & the Rockin' All-Stars are playing tonight
Admittedly, none of these places are IN Davis, and there is a cover ($10-15 depending on venue & whether you're a student), but for that you get a live band, a decent dance floor (so you can wear proper shoes for spinning), and a roof (very helpful when it's raining).might you need a permit for that?

and here's a snippet:
GUIDE FOR PUBLIC EVENT PERMITS
"A permit issued by the Board of Aldermen is required for any event that involves the exclusive
use of public property (except school buildings), or has a significant impact on nearby residents
or public property. For an event in a school building, contact the School Department instead.
To complete the application:
1. Check with the City Clerkâs Office to make sure the event does not conflict with any other
events already registered.
2. Complete the attached Application. Attach any brochures, posters, maps, or other
explanatory material. If the event is a musical or street performance, provide all of the dates
and times of performance, and describe the event clearly. "
... etc., etc.
