There's a Mass Highway hearing tomorrow, Thursday the 13th, concerning extending the bike path that runs through Davis Square. Says the official announcement, "The proposed project consists of construction of a bikepath from Somerville to Belmont. This project will physically and visually connect the proposed work with existing sections of path improving the continuity and safety of the bikepath." I was at some of the earlier meetings about the bikepath; even if you don't have any particular opinions, it's interesting to see what the state has planned.

The official announcement and related documents can be found here.

A Design Public Hearing will be held by MassHighway to discuss the proposed Cambridge-Somerville-Belmont Bikeway construction project in the Cities of Cambridge and Somerville, and the Town of Belmont.

WHERE:
Tufts Administration Building
Council On Aging Meeting Room, 2nd Floor
167 Holland Street
Somerville, MA 02144

WHEN:
Thursday, May 13, 2004 at 7:00 P.M.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed bikepath construction project. All views and comments made at the hearing will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

PROPOSAL: The proposed project consists of construction of a bikepath from Somerville to Belmont. This project will physically and visually connect the proposed work with existing sections of path improving the continuity and safety of the bikepath. The project starts at the end of the Somerville Bicycle path, continues through Davis Square, and follows the Linear Park to Alewife Station in Cambridge where it will connect with the Minuteman Path. At Alewife, a new bridge will be constructed over the Alewife Brook and the new path will continue to Brighton Road, Belmont.

A secure Right of Way is necessary for this project. Acquisitions in fee and permanent or temporary easements may be required. The Cities of Cambridge and Somerville, and the Town of Belmont are responsible for acquiring all needed rights in private or public lands. MassHighway's policy concerning land acquisitions will be discussed at this hearing.

Written views received by MassHighway subsequent to the date of this notice and up to five (5) days prior to the date of the hearing shall be displayed for public inspection and copying at the time and date listed above.

Written statements and other exhibits in place of, or in addition to, oral statements made at the Public Hearing regarding the proposed undertaking are to be submitted to Thomas F. Broderick, P.E., Chief Engineer, Massachusetts Highway Department, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116. Such submissions will also be accepted at the hearing. The final date of receipt of these statements and exhibits will be ten (10) days after this Public Hearing.

Plans will be on display one-half hour before the hearing begins, with an engineer in attendance to answer questions regarding this project.

So this is essentially a path next to the train tracks through the Alewife reservation?

This is confusing... it sounds like what they're really doing is turning the existing Fitchburg Cutoff path (which runs from Alewife to Brighton St, partially paralleling the Fitchburg Line) into a real bike path, and connecting it to the Minuteman Bikeway and the Linear Park. I've no idea what changes they need to make to the Linear Park, other than improving its connection to the Minuteman. Maybe turn it into a straighter path with a line down the middle, but I'm not sure that's the appropriate thing for its location and traffic mix.

What they really need to do is continue the path alongside the Fitchburg Line to Belmont Center, with a bridge over the tracks to provide access to the high school. Bet the abutters will howl in protest, though.

Yeah, def. But the school is not down with students escaping over the tracks.
