According to the website Holland St is not closed, just no parking - I can't see how it could possibly be open, I have to be in and out that day and have guests coming to town, anyone live on Holland last year to who can tell me if it was really open?

I think it's just written in a confusing way -- the bottom part of the list is the parade route, which has to be closed during the parade, but the upper part are other streets that will have parking restrictions and closures of perhaps a lesser nature.

But also, yay, the S'ville Memorial Day parade is really fabulous! Anyone who hasn't seen it should get their butt out and watch and cheer. (If you have seen it, you already know.)

The first set of streets are closed because they are used as staging areas near the parade start, or as breakup area near the parade end. The second set are the actual parade route.

Does it really start at 8am? Isn't that really, really early?

A solemn procession, separate from and prior to the parade, begins at 8 a.m. at American Legion Post #19, 124 Highland Ave. It's usually just the veterans and some dignitaries -- it's kind of moving, but not really designed for spectators.

The parade steps off at 1:00 p.m. from City Hall and will take more than two hours to pass by. Don't know why it falls to Somerville to host the metro area's biggest and best Mem Day parade, but it's a great event and we're proud of it.

Could this (http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,165569,00.html) be part of the reason?

Chelsea, Everett and Southie, to name but a few, are all hardscrabble urban communities with similar traditions of military service -- yet we are the city with the big parade -- and, as noted, we're proud of it.

That's a fairly recent phenomenon, though. I remember years ago standing in Davis Square waiting for the parade, with almost nobody else around.

Parade Time!

Yup, it must be a parade weekend. Two city trucks just pulled up in front of my house. One team proceeded to use a pickaxe to remove the red bricks which were inlaid around the two sidewalk trees and then filled the resulting holes with a careless heap of cedar mulch. The other team messily applied a parking restriction sign to the tree trunk with copious amounts of silver duct tape. I'm sure it's partly personal taste, but the I think we just had a drive-by uglification. The flags are pretty though ;-)

Isn't that very bad for the tree bark? Worse even than locking a bicycle to a tree?
