Now that summer's within reach and all the lovely berries and peaches and other fruits are coming out, I can finally satisfy my craving for the (arguably) best fidget-fruit out there- the Lychee.

Problem is, I have no idea where to find some. Kotobukiya doesn't seem to have any, and I have not yet been able to venture into either Chinatown or the Super88 in Allston. Since I don't think Shaw's is going to start carrying them any time soon, I'm kind of stuck.

Does anyone know of a place I can find more exotic fruits, or am I stuck with venturing across the river? Any idea if Whole Foods carries strange fruits when they're in season?

Thanks!

"fidget-fruit"? This gives me an unpleasant image of a twitching kiwi.

This is well outside of Davis, but I have had good luck with Russo's in Watertown. http://www.russos.com/

I have to hit Super 88 in South Bay today, I drive past there on one of my weekly errands. If I find them fresh, I could bring some back to S-ville for you. E-mail me offline (lj address is fine) if you want to sort a barter/trade/reimburse sort of situation.

Super 88 will have them, and sadly I don't know anyplace else. I CAN say that they are always DEEELICIOUS there.

Various Whole Foods have carried them somewhat inconsistently. You could probably get the produce people to tell you if/when they were going to be getting some. I know they can also special order things for you.

Also keep an eye out for mangosteens while you're at it. ;-)

i *love* mangosteens! i thought they were illegal in the US, though? (fresh, at least)

They've been legal for import since last summer as long as they've been treated for Asian fruitfly. So legal, but hard-to-find and generally expensive.

According to the Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/27/dining/27frui.html?scp=10&sq=mangosteen&st=nyt) they are now available in small quantities for high prices. Apparently they're allowed in as long as they are irradiated before being allowed into the country.

TJs also at least used to sell them canned, haven't checked in a while.
They were quite good actually, not like those canned fruits that barely taste like fruit anymore.

There's also a Super 88 in Malden, which I find is easier to get to than the Allston one. Mmm, lychee.

Market Basket has had them in the past, and you ought to check out the Reliable in Union Square, but Super 88 is surely your best bet.

I've seen them at Market Basket, too. I've never looked for them at Whole Foods.

Lychees...yum! I bought them a few times in Chinatown last summer and compared to regular grocery stores they are much cheaper as well... I can't remember the name of the particular store I was in but if you look around in some of the larger stores there you should find them.
