OK. Someone just threw an egg through my kitchen and into my wall of our third floor apartment right in the center of the square (near Mike's). Someone must have left the back door open -- I found it ajar. Somebody came up the back stairs and threw an egg through our kitchen that was, at the time, full of people. Nobody noticed until I found the egg residue on the wall a few minutes later. There are only four apartments in the building and we'd only opened our back door since we were cooking and the kitchen was hot.

What's up? Has anyone seen similar behavior?

Sorry, my bad.

As a matter of fact... yes.

We've been hit four times in the past five weeks, each time on a Friday night between 9pm and 1am. (The only exception was last week, and that was probably because it was raining.)

Heh. We were just at Your Move, and had this very conversation, which I was about to relate as a comment. Glad you beat me to it! (Less glad about the epidemic of egging.)

It was clear no good would come from this....

Was there an egg used by any of the many people cooking in the kitchen at the time?

I really, honestly, don't mean to be stupid but the tag for this is "crime". Is egging an actual crime? Seriously, is there a law? If I came to your house right now, walked into your home uninvited and threw an egg at the wall, you call the police as I run home, you identify me as the culprit, would I be arrested?

If I threw the egg at a person, I could see this as a crime but what about property? What about egging cars?

According to the Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2006/10/31/the-legal-implications-of-throwing-eggs/?mod=WSJBlog) (via this "Google" thing I've heard so much about) it can be considered either vandalism or criminal mischief, yes.

YMMV by state, but there you have it.

(And actually if some stranger literally walked into my house while I was sitting here typing, messed up my house a little, and then fled laughing, I may even consider that assault, or some other more serious charge. That can be very threatening thing to do, even if they never tried to touch me.)

The protiens in eggs react very badly to car paint and cause almost a perment bond. This is not simply wiping the egg off your car. If you're unlucky enough to miss a spot and have it dry you now have almost perment mark on your car.

The egg hitting is also very startling and I could see some situations where it might cause an accident by diverting the drivers attention from something else.

This is vandalism.

vandalism is a crime. It's not a felony, but it is a crime. Yes, there actually is a law against vandalism.

I tagged it that way for want of any better tag.

"Vandalism" would be better, imhb.

Vandalism is a subset of crime, and I'm trying to keep the number of distinct tags reasonable.

I thought this sort of thing only happened around Halloween. Then again, a common senior prank is to throw eggs, shaving cream, toilet paper, etc. close to graduation, and school's almost out at this time of the year.

And no eggs!

Well, another blog in nearby Arlington reported a note on someone's front door that "a shark is in the living room". Police were called.

Sadly egging seems to be fairly common around Somerville. A group I was with was hit by several thrown eggs and on a separate occasion my girlfriend was hit with an egg. Both of these events occurred while we were on bicycle.

Last Wednesday my car was egged while driving over the tracks on park ave in mid somerville. The sound was very scary, and my young son got some egg spray through his open window. Luckily I got out to check what it was and I keep cleaning supplies (for grafitti in the playground) in my car.
