not really. But there's Mind's Eye in Porter, which is across the parking lot from the mall (on white street). If you start at Porter Square Books, and walk *straight* across the parking lot, you'll be there.

Mass ave, near Bob Slate Stationery, there's a craft store that seems to have whole big bucketfuls of yarn. Not being a knitter and not having been in, I cannot confirm if they do indeed sell yarn, but it looks suspiciously like the do, to me.

That's called Spark Crafts. They used to be on Grove Street in Davis Square, but moved a few blocks away.

They do, but they're not much of a yarn store; they're more like a craft learning annex that happens to keep the supplies their students need in stock, but they don't really have much of a selection of yarn (beads and scrapbooking supplies though, boy howdy).

They're both in Porter Square, but that's pretty much walking distance from Davis.

I think the sewing machine store may have a small amount of yarn for sale. More dedicated yarn stores nearby are Spark (on Mass Ave, closer to Porter, which used to be in Davis but moved), Mind's Eye Yarns (Porter), and Woolcott (Harvard)

I tagged this crafts, as the subject has come up a few times in the past. Click on the tag and search the old posts for "yarn".

There's a place one street over from Mass Ave in Arlington, just before highway 60, that has lots of crafts and mucho yarn in the basement. I just can't remember the address (perhaps something Broadway?)

The place is called Play Time (http://www.rhinestones.com/home.htm). You can take an outbound 87 from Davis to Arlington Center. You pass it just before your reach the end of the line. Just walk back a block and there you are.

The yarn is downstairs and the prices are pretty good.

this is true, but it's all pretty much Red Heart acrylic yarn.

If all else fails, there is yarn.com. They have great discounts -- 20% off for a $60+ purchase and 25% for $120+ purchase. It's not great if you want to touch/see the yarn before purchasing it, but a great price if you do know what you want.

Other than Mind's Eye, the nearest full-selection yarn store I know of is Woolcott & Co. in Harvard Square.

It's not in davis or even in Somerville, but if you find yourself near Downtown Crossing, check out Windsor Button -- they have one of the best yarn selections you'll find around here that's subway-accessible: http://www.windsorbutton.com/

Windsor Button is like a magical place - I remember when I found it, I had no idea it was there, but now that I do...how did I live without it?

Both Spark and Mind's Eye are awesome (Mind's Eye has kinda weird hours) but expensive. Fabulous if you want to make neat stuff out of hand-dyed alpaca, but not awesome if you want to make a decent scarf for less than $20.

I usually go to Pearl Art Store in Central for cheaper stuff, Spark for expensive. Spark also has craft nights and whatnot which could be fun.

FYI, I asked this question (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/771850.html) a year or so ago.
