A group of my guy friends just got a new apartment an as a housewarming gift/inside joke I want to get them a cactus.

Where (outside of Davis is okay) can I find a 8-12 inch cactus?

Also, best place to get nails done around the square? I want something really blingin' like gold tips with airbrushing or something.

Thanks in advance!

I think Pemberton Farms has some cacti. I'm not sure if they have any that large though.

Yep, Pemberton Farms definitely does have cacti. And it's only a couple of blocks from Davis.

Julie's Nails FTW! No place else does as good a job as they do...and it's only $30 for a regular mani-pedi!

I think they are called "needles" on a cactus, not nails. I am sure your friends will really appreciate a blingin' cactus with gold tips.

Mahoney's Garden (Shop?) on Route 3 in Wilmington? Burlington? has a whole section of cacti in their main building. Walk in the main, front door, turn left, and before you exit to go outside to the annuals there's a pile of cacti to your right.

Winchester?

Winchester, about half a mile before the Woburn line. Probably a 20-minute drive from Davis Square and environs (I like to take 38 through Medford). I think there's another Mahoney's in Brighton that might be more accessible on public transportation, but the Winchester one is the really big one.

This is way, way after the fact, but in case some future person turns this question up in Google or something, the 350 bus from Alewife goes right past Mahoney's in Winchester on Route 3.

It is very unlikely that you will find a cactus of that height, especially at Pemberton's, Lowe's, Home Depot, or any florist shop. At this time of year, many places have reduced the number of houseplants they carry to make room for perennials and annuals for outdoor planting. Also, most places carry "starter" cacti which average around 2-4 inches, and not mature cacti. A mature cactus is pricier and more likely to be found at Mahoney's. You should maybe try to bribe Rudy's in Teele Square to sell you one of their many spiny residents from their window.

Good luck!

I saw some larger blooming cacti in the Pemberton's greenhouse, but they were more of a blooming Hens and Chicks variety than a mini-Saguaro type. I got the impression from the post that she wanted a classic cactus. Most of their cactus stock has been displaced for the fancy impatiens.

To get your nails polished, go to Julie's Nails in Davis, for crazy airbrush antics, try someplace in Revere maybe.
