To answer the question of what happened to shut down the square last week, turn to page 8 of the 5/19 issue of The Somerville News.

(I'd give a URL, but there is none.)

"Police evacuated buildings and cordoned off much of Davis Sq. in response to a bomb scare May 14.
The scare began when postal workers at the Davis Sq. post office found an incompletely addressed package, with a political statement written on it, outside the door of the post office, Det. Lt. James Polito said.
"The box was about one foot by six inches, about the sie of a shoebox. The statement on it was 'This is a political statement, nothing more. Free speech is still free,'" said Sgt. John T. Aufiero.
Approximately fifteen minutes after the Somerville Police were notified of the suspicious package, they were informed that Michael Bernstein, a Medford resident, had turned himself in to Medford Police, Polito said.
. . .
Lt. Paul Trant said that Bernstein was being charged under Chapter 266 Section 102 A 1/2, which covers possesion and transportation of a hoax device.
. . ."

Yeah, there's more, but that covers it, really.
