Assuming it's not quite as sweltering tomorrow, I'm thinking about checking out the farmer's market. Anything I should know? I've never been (to this one) before. Anything to check out or avoid specifically? Is it worth trekking over from newton? (I have the day off tomorrow and will be local in 2 more weeks, and I'm curious!)

If you're not T-bound, I think the one in Arlington is better--bigger and more parking.

I don't know about the Davis one, but if you're still in Newton this Saturday, you should check out the Waltham farmer's market (http://www.waltham-community.org/FarmersMarket.html).

It's still very early in the season, so there's not a whole lot of harvest yet. When I was at the market last week, they were selling mostly seedlings and herbs, but I bought some rhubarb. When I got my CSA today, there was arugula, spinach, and pea tendrils, so those might be available at some of the stands.

I've found all the vendors at the Davis market to be very friendly, and all the products fantastic. Given the lack of fresh veggies in June, there are other stands that sell local/organic/artisinal goat cheese, bread, and chocolate.

Overall, the market is fun to check out, but don't plan on getting a ton of variety beyond greens.

IMHO, you should absolutely not come to Davis from Newton for a farmer's market. That pretty much defeats a significant part of the point. Try the ones in Newton and nearby for now, and when you live here, shop the one here.

I get that, but it does seem that there are several options (http://www.massfarmersmarkets.org/t-allmarkets.aspx) closer to Newton than Davis.

Land's Sake (http://www.landssake.org/index.htm) is way cool if you have a bicycle or car in Newton and they'll probably be opening within the next week or so...

True, although these guys are open every day once they're open, which is always nice, and their selection is really quite good. Oh, also, they don't close at, like, 5, which is by far the MOST ANNOYING thing about ALL of the city farmers markets.

If you want seedlings or greens, it's good at this period of year.

In a few more weeks there will be an abundance of everything and it will definitely be worth coming by.

From Newton you might check out the Boston farmer's markets. They happen several times a week at several different locations.

It is definitely not worth going out of your way to come to the Davis one. So far, I've only been able to buy bread and a basil plant. It is very small and there hasn't been any veggies other than radishes and rubbarb.

*two cents*

I agree with this- later in the summer the Davis market is excellent, but there's a reason most farmer's markets don't open until July...

I love getting my seedlings from the Davis Square market, so I'm glad they open in June.

The guy selling goat cheese is worth visiting -- I especially like his smoked goat cheese.

Taza has a stand selling their stone-ground chocolate bars, but it's nothing you can't find at Savenor's.

There's always at least one bread place there, and I've had some very tasty bread -- especially the guy with tiny little loaves.

One of my housemmates was very happy with the quality of beef tenderloins he bought from the meat guy there.
