i just perused the archives about swimming and with great joy, i learned about the tufts pool.  i called the city of medford and season passes are only $15 (yay!) but only for medford residents (boo!).  alas, i am a somervillian through and through.  does anyone know if there's any way for non-medford residents to use the pool?  or if there is some way to circumvent this whole pesky resident thing?  i have spent the morning daydreaming about swimming during my lunch break and now my dreams have been crushed.

Try calling Somerville (311); they may have a similar deal. The Tufts campus straddles both cities, but they have a Medford address because they don't want to be associated with us grubby Somervillains.

Alternatively, the Kennedy School (at Elm and Cherry Streets) has a pool, and I think they have public swim hours.

I believe this is the Tufts Pool next to the Curtis Tufts School where Main Street meets Medford Street in South Medford, not a pool on the Tufts campus. If you ever take the 101 bus, it goes right by there.

Kennedy pool has public lap swimming in the morning on monday, wednesday, and friday, but it's more expensive and the hours are limited. It's $6/day for non-somerville residents, and I think only $5 for residents. There's a longer-term deal you can get also, but I forget the details. It's worth the long-term deal if you plan to swim three times a week, but if you only swim once or twice a week it's cheaper to pay the daily rate.

also: i am pretty sure the kennedy school pool is not open during lunch. they're pretty careful to make sure all the non-staff adults are gone before the kids get into school in the morning.

It might be worth a shot but I have been going to the Tufts pool for 2 years and the people that run it never fail to be complete dicks about everything. Doubtful, in my mind, that they'd ignore your not being from Medford.

There are 2 outdoor pools in Somerville, one at Foss Park (E. Somerville, on Broadway) and one at Dilboy Field (W. Somerville, Rte 16?) I think they're run by MDC and free of charge, but no water yet..

If you need to cool off in the afternoon or weekends, there's an awesome sprinkler park in E. Arlington, take Broadway, turn right at the Dunkin Donuts. It's in a school yard, so not open during school hours.

The pool at Dillboy tends to be less crowded.

Another state-run outdoor pool near Somerville is at Russell Field in Cambridge, at the end of Rindge Avenue. But I don't know if they're open yet for the season.

I don't know if things have changed this year, but in past years no one has cared a bit if you are from Somerville. To get the Tufts pool photo ID pass, you need to go during a small window of time in the evening, fill out a form that includes your address and phone number, pay your money, and get your photo taken. In the past at least, they haven't cared where you live. (Wright's Pond is another matter. You have to be from Medford to visit that beach.)

In fact, I can think of several people I know who said they were planning to join again this year, so perhaps all you have to do is show up with your $15.

Upper Mystic Lake is good for swimming in too. If you are swimming out of the beach area, though, wear water shoes! (broken glass + bottom of foot = ouch/stitches/no swimming).

Because this always comes up: there are researchers doing work in the Lake who have attested to its cleanliness and safety for swimming. As with all natural swimming areas, though, it's advisable to avoid swimming in the day or two after heavy rains!

We swim there a lot, but I always wonder about pesticide runoff from the lawns surrounding the lakes. Do you know if anyone ever checks those levels?

You're talking about Sandy beach in Winchester. They usually check the water every early morning with a diver under the water checking the sand.

I'm not eeeks, but there's a schedule of when you can get a pass on this Medford website http://www.medford.org/Pages/MedfordMA_Rec/recfacilities

I know several Somerville residents that have gotten passes. I don't think they hassle you, they just don't have very convenient times to get the passes.

We signed up this morning - The forms ask for your address, including what town you live in and I wrote Somerville, and they don't say anywhere that you need to live in Medford. There are hours on Saturday mornings before the pool opens (10am-12:30) throughout July, at the pool itself (Main St at the Medford St intersection) to fill out forms and get your picture taken.
You will get an id card with your picture, weight, height, eye color, hair color (all self reported) and your picture is like a mug shot complete with your pool pass number, you can swim the same afternoon with your receipt but you'll get a laminated card the next day.
