Good Time Emporium Meetup
Jun. 12th, 2008 12:26 pmAs the all-knowing
ron_newman noted in this post, Good Time Emporium in Somerville will close its doors on June 30 to make way for an Ikea. Personally, I think we would all be better off if they just share the space (think of the possibilities), but then again, I like the idea of a KFC/Tanning Salon/Maryland State Police Substation (this actually exists).
In the scant time we have left to enjoy this Greater Boston landmark, I propose a meetup. I'm just gonna throw June 20 out as a possible date, but I leave it to your snarky wisdom in the end.

Date: 2008-06-12 04:43 pm (UTC)When I moved to Somerville in 2000, there was an IKEA "coming fall 2000."
...8 years later...we're finally getting the damn IKEA. Awesome.

Date: 2008-06-12 06:36 pm (UTC)As for the long delay in IKEA, in a nutshell it's been about their wanting to put a big sprawling store designed (here in the US anyway) for suburbs with lots of land for parking etc. into already congested East Somerville. Pushback and design changes (and land swap) took time.
I notice IKEA will be giving away couches and chairs etc. when it opens in Brooklyn NY next week. I hope we get to partake in something similar when it opens here.

Date: 2008-06-12 07:57 pm (UTC)i read some of the somerville planning dept. documents about the ikea and the rest of the assembly square renovation. it's supposedly going to be a 'green' mixed commercial residential development. of course, the whole thing has taken forever because every involved party has very strong opinions on every detail.
