According to the Herald, he was caught because the victim was able to get him to give her his phone number:
Mahoney, 25, confronted the woman near Tufts University where she was walking early Sunday morning, police said. Then he forced her behind a nearby house and raped her.

At some point, however, the woman was able to convince Mahoney to give her his phone number, police said. Investigators were then able to track down Mahoney using those digits, according to law enforcement officials.

Utterly bizarre, but kudos to this woman for having the presence of mind to exploit it and help prevent the next assault.

That was very smart of her. I'd never think to do that in this situation. I'm glad the guy is off the streets. Is this the same guy who attacked a girl the week before or a different one

Brilliant, and bravo to the woman who had the presence of mind to play him like that.

(Did his response to her ploy make anyone else thing, "Ooooh, future Darwin Award nominee!"?)

I'm really curious as to how she did it. It's horrible that it happened at all, but awesome that she managed to get his phone number.

Agreed. I feel absolutely terrible for her but oddly proud of her at the same time. It's hard to think about but at some point she clearly crossed the line from "I have to get out of this!" to "I'm gonna catch this asshole." I have to imagine that's a nearly impossible thing to accomplish. Bravo.

I bet he offered it to her. What a dumbass. Of course if he had smarts, he wouldn't have done it at all.

Prepare for the inevitable, "She asked for his phone number, so it was consentual" defense. Ugh.
