international taxes

Hi,

My husband and I are weighing an offer from his company to relocate to France for 2-3 years.  We would need to retain an accountant to assist us with all of the tax filings & issues related to this move, preferably someone who specializes in or has experience with international or (ideally) French taxes.  I see one other post on this topic in the archives but it is specifically related to UK income.  I will inquire with the firm recommended there, Donahue & Associates.  If anyone has any other recommendations I would be grateful, I'm overwhelmed by the results of a Google search.  Thanks.

Donahue & Associates were very helpful to me and my (now ex-) husband when we returned from a couple of years in Australia. I've used them for my taxes ever since and recommend at least talking to them.

thanks for this info. We'll have to file both a US and a French return b/c my husband will still be considered a US employee on temporary assignment, and because we will be establishing residency in France, we have to pay French taxes. However, I have been advised that an agreement exists between France and the US that we can claim a tax credit on the US return to avoid the double taxation as long as we have been living in France for less than 5 years.

yes, as I understand it these agreements are on a country-by-country basis, it is not EU-wide.....this is unfortunate b/c having to pay full income tax to 2 entities seems unfair. I've also heard if we ever want to return to Taxachusetts as full-time residents, we have to continue paying MA state taxes as well for the duration of our time abroad. But not 100% on that one, this is why I need someone who does this for a living!

My American friend who lives in the UK has to file US taxes (though I am not clear on the details, and indeed try not to be, because every time she talks about it my brain blows up).
