Does this involve karaoke?

Kind of. The game tracks your pitch and how well you pronounce the lyrics. It doesn't care about tonality or key: you can sing like a strangled marmot and as long as the pitch matches and you get the lyrics right, you're good.

Of course, you can also choose to play guitar or drums.

Agreed with the above. Also, it does provide the words to you as you sing them, as in karaoke.
