Driving down the Alewife Brook Parkway the other day, I had a WTF? millisecond looking at these as I willed my car to stay in it's narrow little lane while traffic whooshed past. Needless to say, I didn't get a good look, but I don't remember them having been there at all. They're somewhere near the Mobil and that cool ivy-covered mystery building. They're set back quite a way from the road, but tall. Anybody know what they're about?

can you be more specific? I don't know where "the Mobil" or "the ivy-covered mystery building" are.

I believe that building is MWRA-related, some kind of pump-house or water related facility.

Yes, it looks like a pump house to me, too

Damn, did I beat Ron on something? It's new senior/disabled housing at Capen Court.

Ron will probably be able to tell us what the city is planning on doing with the old two-story 1950s public housing-style brick buildings.

Nope. I know nothing whatsoever about that neighborhood.

Aha. I didn't until recently, but my PCP yelled at me to work some exercise into my routine; given my current phyisque that pretty much limited me to walking.

After a week or so I found I was walking down different streets everyday, so I grabbed a map and it morphed into Le Grand Prix du Somerville. I've got everything west of Cedar Street covered already, plus north of Highland over to Lowell. It's been a great way to get a better sense of the city. The only moderate hassle has been walking down dead-end streets, and getting quizzed on my efforts.

I think this is what you are talking about, but I am not certain:

I have to say I've been watching this thing go up since I bike by it every day on my ride from Teele Square to the West Medford Commuter Rail stop and every time I think "gee, I hope this isn't going to be *more* luxury condos." It makes me pretty glad to see something else for a change.

I believe the new building you're referring to are the new assisted living/VNA apartments.

It could be. I get confused about what's going on over there. You hear about three things--the Conwell School, the VNA, and Capen Court, but it's not clear to me if some of these things are the same, or if they are three different projects.
