This sucks - I wish you the best of luck in recovering your bike.

Everyone can secure their bike more effectively by using both a small U lock AND a cable, every time.

Quoting from Sheldon Brown, "If you use both the U-lock and the cable lock [...], you are more than twice as safe as you would be with either of them alone. Either type of lock can be defeated, but each requires a different large, bulky tool which is useless against the other. The best U-locks are the smallest. [...] A U-lock should go around the rear rim and tire, somewhere inside the rear triangle of the frame."

What kind of lock was it?

I don't ask for reasons of "I told you so" so much as "if you have this kind of lock, watch out because you are vulnerable."

Also, do you have any idea what time it was likely stolen?

Last night when I got home around 830ish there was a cool blue bike locked up outside a house on my road...Ive never seen a bike there before. I will check it out when Im home tonight to see if it is yours? I live in Teele. I doubt someone is stupid enough to steal it then lock it up outside but ya never know!

Several friends biked to my apartment Tuesday night (I live on your street), so it's entirely possible that you might have seen one of their bikes, though by the time I got home it was dark so I didn't notice them.

I'm a stalker.

... just kidding ;-) You made a post a while back talking about how your packages kept getting delivered to the wrong address. I haven't run into that problem yet, but I'm just waiting for the day my mail ends up on the other side of Davis by mistake.

Was this on the Holland Street side or the College Ave side?

I assume you also reported this to the police?

Good (I always ask this of people, there have been several incidents where crimes have been reported HERE but not with the authorities!) You should also let the Somerville police know if you haven't already; don't assume the T-cops and the locals talk to each other. Just be sure to let them know you've informed the transit police as well.

Is there a registration number on the bike so that if we're out and about and see a bike that looks like yours, we can determine if it is?

This really sucks. Sorry to hear it.

One thing over in Amsterdam, most of the bikes there have the rear wheel lock and folks use either the cable locks or heavy duty chains as well. Still, though, bikes still occasionally get jacked.

My bike was recently stolen too, right off of our front porch too. It was cable tied up to a column and I guess someone just walked up onto the porch and cut it off. Pisses me off.

One piece of advice that is not specific to your situation but may be helpful: most home insurance policies and renters' insurance policies will cover a loss resulting from the theft of bike, even when it's stolen from some place other than your home. That won't spare you the expense of the deductible, but it helps nonetheless.

Definitely keep your eyes peeled around town. My old roommate had her bike stolen from our porch on Willow Ave, and we came across it a few weeks later at a bike rack in Central Square.

Same condition. It wasn't a fancy bike, though...it was a vintage blue Schwinn. Still had the baskets and the bell! :)

There are two messages in this group about bikes stolen from front porches, and a friend of mine also had their bike stolen off their front porch. I would say that if you do have your bike locked up on a porch, make sure it is securely locked. It sounds like a rash of thefts with that MO.

check by the cvs?

I saw a rockhopper by the CVS in Davis Square today (7/25, about 1pm), not sure if that was it tho. It might have been powder blue or maybe just gray. If you're around, maybe you should drop by and see if that's it.

I saw this on craigslist- don't know enough about bikes but thought I'd give you a heads-up just in case.
