Date: 2008-07-23 12:16 pm (UTC)Everyone can secure their bike more effectively by using both a small U lock AND a cable, every time.
Quoting from Sheldon Brown, "If you use both the U-lock and the cable lock [...], you are more than twice as safe as you would be with either of them alone. Either type of lock can be defeated, but each requires a different large, bulky tool which is useless against the other. The best U-locks are the smallest. [...] A U-lock should go around the rear rim and tire, somewhere inside the rear triangle of the frame."

Date: 2008-07-23 12:34 pm (UTC)I don't ask for reasons of "I told you so" so much as "if you have this kind of lock, watch out because you are vulnerable."
Also, do you have any idea what time it was likely stolen?

Date: 2008-07-25 02:42 am (UTC)... just kidding ;-) You made a post a while back talking about how your packages kept getting delivered to the wrong address. I haven't run into that problem yet, but I'm just waiting for the day my mail ends up on the other side of Davis by mistake.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:56 pm (UTC)This really sucks. Sorry to hear it.
One thing over in Amsterdam, most of the bikes there have the rear wheel lock and folks use either the cable locks or heavy duty chains as well. Still, though, bikes still occasionally get jacked.
