[personal profile] ron_newman posting in [community profile] davis_square
Have you tried to post a comment in this community, only to have LJ ask you to "confirm you are a human" by typing two words into a CAPTCHA?

If so, you are "watching" this community (perhaps from your friends list) but have not joined it. Once you join it, you'll no longer see the CAPTCHA screen when commenting. See this davis_meta post for an explanation of why we recently had to adopt this security measure.

Thanks for making it easy, Ron. I've been meaning to actually join for a while now, but it's been low priority and now it was quick and is done. :)

Is there any way we can confirm that [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman is human?

Sure, he can fill out captchas, and his Turing test pass rate is impressive, but I have a sneaking suspicion that if we removed his faceplate we'd just see a mass of jumbled wiring and randomly flashing LEDs.

There would also be technology sounds. Maybe boops and beeps, or the sound of a 14.4 modem?

Not the sound of a punchcard machine?

No, and also not the sound of the whirring gears of Charles Babbage's difference engine. Why? Because he's not that old.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

When you meet Ron in the square, have you tried presenting him with a captcha?

No, but maybe someone should. I just assumed he could pass one. Maybe that's why he hates captchas so much?

As far as I'm concerned, any machine that can contribute to a discussion as well as Ron can is welcome on this community. (But what do I know, I'm a space alien.)

A test for humanity created by a machine?

Yeah, and what about extra clever dolphins, and intelligent life from other planets? Some could pass the Captcha test and some couldn't, but none of them are human.

This test is a sham! :-)
