I just got this notice in a myspace bulletin, and I'm sure this will be popular with the nearby Davis Square residents (Union Square is close enough).

Union Square Hoedown

On August 13.from 5-8 pm Union Square Main Streets will be a hosting a square dance on the Union Square Plaza. Caller Dennis McCormack will be providing instruction in Traditional and Modern American Square Dancing and then will lead you through the music.

Show up anytime between 5-8 , lessons will be ongoing and dances will stop and start periodically. No partner no problem. All ages and experiences welcome! The event is free.

When I think of Somerville, I think of Square Dancing.

Edit: People can meet for Square Dancing and then hop on the bus back to the Square for the Burren meetup. Maybe we can have the meetup in traditional square dancing clothes? Hmmmm...I like this idea.

This is awesome!

Okay, I guess I'll be late to the meet-up.

Unless they're doing the shopping cart.

Or, say, a choreographed line dance.

Please no. I don't know if I will ever adjust to the fact that people who -don't- live in remote rural areas will do square dancing. It's something I associate with the farming families I grew up with, and for the love of god I thought I had got away from that world!

I love dancing, but I will not be square dancing.

HOW many people do you know who are involved in Tech Squares (http://www.mit.edu/~tech-squares) (which has nothing to do with this, but a number of folks may be showing up anyway)?

A bunch, I think... (at least one... ;)

I don't know. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know ;) Kidding; I know that I know a fair number of people who do contra dancing, which is a close cousin of square dancing. I think I just can't get over the mental image of square dancing that I have, which involves those hideous skirts, and a cultural context that always made me twitch.

Once you've seen people swap genders every tip or dance in hexes rather than squares you'll definitely get over the mental image :-)

I just made a Facebook event for this, and invited a bunch of contra dancers, including some who also do Tech Squares.

Square dancing gives me flashbacks to 6th grade... Who's brilliant idea was it to force boys and girls to square dance right when some of them were starting to decide that the other gender wasn't icky? *AND* to add dating style stress to the whole "last picked" thing..

Sorry, yeah, I know I have issues, shut up.

We did the Virginia Reel in grade school. Picking partners was an exercise in sheer torture.

we did square dancing in elementary school too.

it was particularly great for completely ostracizing the kid with the skin disease.

I did it in elementary school, too! We were broken into groups and had to choreograph our own and find music with the right beats.

My group did ours to Pretty Woman. I wish I could remember it.

O_O Square dancing with people I've never met?? And that'll be all your first impressions of me??
WHY ARE YOU SO CRUEL, FATE?

That's a good point- I could always just watch and not make a fool of myself...
I agree with the whole be there for an hour thing. I can only take so much of "My wife left me, and now all I love is my dog and my truck" songs. After all, The Buuren calls.

uh... that's country music, not squaredancing music.

I'm not sure what kind of music this event will have, but I doubt it will be achy breaky country line dance music.

Dive for the Oyster! Dive! Dive! Dive!
It's my eighth grade camping trip all over again.
Do-si-do and an alleman left, bow to your partner, now to your corner!

I know, right! 8th grade, and the song calls for "Dive for the Oyster! Dive! Dig for the Clam! Dig!

er... no innuendo there. And the dance move it is asking for doesn't help matters.
