I love Bowl and Board. Its great that there is a new store opening!
I worked in the Bowl and Board on Martha's Vineyard when I was a teenager, around 1995-1996. It was the first job I ever had, and it was a wonderful place. I still stop in and say hi every summer.
I was there last week and the things that Bowl and Board carries is really different from going to similar-but-large-chain stores. Very worth checking out! :)
??? Seems a waste of space and overpriced on first inspection. I'm biased because I really miss that bookstore, but it's just not for me. Yes, I know the bookstore only move to Porter, but they never seemed to recover after loosing massive amounts of inventory a year or more ago during desperate sales with little coming in to replace it. I miss the days of indie book and record stores and hours of digging for gold. Damn you eBay!
No, I reregistered recently because I need to post a curb alert and had not posted anything in ages and could not log in to my old account for some reason.
You know some people lurk for a long time and then register an account when they actually have something to say. My 2 cents is quit being a jerk to new people.
When someone appears seemingly out of the blue just to snark, it looks a little odd.
If you think my callout was being a mean jerk, clearly you haven't seen davis_square at its finest. Fortunately beantownclown and I are reasonable sorts and have called a snark-truce, so no need to take up arms on hir behalf.
Yeah, I'm all glad you called a snark truce and what not. But it just seems that not only did you give the hard time to the person for their opinion but that you even bothered to look up when they registered their name. I mean aren't people allowed to think Bowl and Board is overpriced?
I've lurked her a long time, but I sometimes find this place less than welcoming to new people and to people who have contrary opinions.
Yes, I'm probably taking out this frustration on your post, but I guess I'm in a defend the other guy mood.
I'm not sure why you're tilting at this particular windmill, but:
- I looked them up because we've had people in the past who have joined just to post obnoxious comments.
- It wasn't simply that they didn't like B&B (I have no opinion on it, never having been there, fyi) but more to the point that it was that their very first comment in the community was a big complaint, and their posting history was virtually non-existent.
- We clearly have a wide philosophical difference on what constitutes "a hard time" or "being a mean jerk," so I'll just point out that while I challenged btc, I wasn't rude, profane, or personally attacking him.
Yes we do disagree. We have different perspectives, if you can't understand my point, my only suggestion is to go back and read your first response to the poster and think how they might feel by your critiquing of their post. Also consider that you posted the response, so you are seeing it through your lenses, others could see it differently like me.
Doesn't make me right and you wrong or vice versa. I just called it as I saw it and think this is going on far longer than necessary, so I'm done with this thread as of here.
I'm glad for this - there needed to be some shopping alternatives that weren't Poor Little Rich Girl in Davis!! *although I lament the closing of M&M which I never visited.
there are many more shopping opportunities in davis besides poor little rich girl: davis squared has interesting stock, magpie has even more interesting stock. both make for good shopping. the clothing stores on holland carry a wealth of goods, as well. while the new artifaktori store on college is half junk shop and half vintage clothing shop, it carries a wonderful selection of both.
I know this wasn't in reply to me but I wanted to add a few cents, lol. None of those stores speak to myself or any of my friends. Some people aren't into vintage/junk. I'm not sure how to word it but the area needs a more "mainstream" affordable store. Where the tiniest of items aren't $10+ a piece and where they aren't geared toward just the artsy type person. A variety of items/prices for a variety of people would be nice.
i am a size 14 or 16 depending on the day and i have three things from those stores. at least one from chinook (capri-type pants) and one from cibeline (a dress that was on clearance), if memory serves, but i can't remember were that third thing was from-probably cibeline as the styles there suit me.
i've noticed that, too! There is hardly anything in the square that would appeal, in general, to men. unloess those men like to get all their clothes at goodwill, that is.
There are a lot of people who have $$$ in somerville - "yuppies" etc with 2 incomes and lots of money to spend on things. There are a lot of working class people with less money. There are a lot of people with no money.
This is why we have Bowl and Board, McDonalds and the Dollar Store within feet of each other.
I bet their Cambridge fan base will follow them to Davis Square. Although I wonder what the effect will be on the rest of the 'furniture district' that surrounded them at Putnam Square.
