Hi, I'm starting grad school at Tufts next week and my hair is looking a mess. Does anyone have a black hair salon they can recommend? Everyone knows word of mouth is best when it comes to hair. Thanks!!

I'm at Tufts as well. What program are you starting?

Fletcher

Welcome to Fletcher - my partner's a second year in International Law. Good group. Possibly see you around during orientation week(s) as I sponge off of free social events!

As I'm a white guy, I can only offer hazy memories of location, but what the hell, it's a starting point.

There are two that I remember in the Winter Hill area, close to Foss Park (the only name I remember is Curlz and Cutz, not sure if it's still open, I seem to remember they also did fur storage). I remember another in East Somerville, close to Sullivan. I believe there's also one on Highland, up a bit from Davis, but I don't remember the name (I do remember it was a beauty supply store as well).

Good luck!

Highland is Benny's and even though I'm also completely a white dude, that's where I get my cuts. The guy is phenomenal. Best haircuts I've ever gotten.

I swear by the Supercuts on Bolyston St in Boston (between the Copley and Hynes stops on the Green Line.) I have very fine hair for a white girl, but more than half their staff are African-American, so you will probably be covered. Plus, it's $16, and I've had better hair cuts there than the $45 places.

All of my friends who are women of color swear by Salon Monet (http://www.hairsalonmonet.com/) on Newbury Street.

me and a few other tufts girl's go to lewis' hair salon (http://www.openlist.com/cambridge-ma_lewis-beauty-salon/300414659/) in central. especially good if you get a press but they do perms, tracks, sets, highlighting, and everything else you'd expect in a black hair salon.

Is your hair straightened or natural?

I swear by Wendy Rapoza (http://www.wendyrapoza.com/) who works at Escape Spa in the South End. She's white, which made me nervous, but she has worked in black beauty shops around town, attends black hair shows and does a fantastic job cutting my natural hair. I assume she does straightened hair as well. I know she does a great job cutting curly and straight white hair. However, I don't think she does relaxers.
