Diesel's bagels aren't bad (get it toasted). I see on your profile you're from Jersey. I'm familiar with Jersey bagels, and you'll probably have a hard time finding those dense chewy bagels outside of maybe Brookline. No place in Davis makes their own bagels (that I know of). They usually come from area bakeries.

a year ago a transplanted new yorker said the only decent bagel place (by NY standards) he knew of in the davis area was in teele square and only open till noon.

i can't remember the name, but (assuming it's still open) there can't be many bagel shops in teele. :)

your best bet is to head out to Pemberton Gardens (corner of Mass Ave. and Day St.). they carry Iggy's bagels there which are the second best bagel in Boston (behind Kupel's in Brookline), in my not so humble opinion.

Someday Cafe used to carry Iggy's bagels, and now carry some kind of glorified cardboard. when I asked them why the change, the dude at the register mumbled something about them owing Iggy's a bunch of cash...

Yup, still open

Transplanted New Yorker is probably referring to the 'Magnificent Muffin and Bagels' shop on Broadway, on the eastern (Davis Square) side of Teele Square (where Teele Square is defined as the intersection of Broadway and Holland). I believe it's next to, or a few doors down from, the Fleet ATM. Across the street from Tip Top Thai/Amelia's Kitchen/etc. And to address what [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom said above, I think they make them in-house.

in someday?

you'll get over being intimidated, once you realize just how dorky we all are.

(if you really want intimidation, go for diesel, and even then, you'll get over it in a few months.)

To get to Teele you walk up Holland from Davis. That's the easiest way, anyway. And the Magnificent Muffin's bagels *are* pretty good. :)

The 2 subsidary squares of note by Davis are Teele and Powderhouse. To get to Teele, head out Holland St for about 1/2 mile. Teele is the corner of Holland and Broadway. You can also take the 87 or 88 bus.
(To get to Powderhouse, head out college for about 1/2 mile to the traffic circle with Broadway and a number of smaller streets. A number of buses also run this way.)

Ball square is down (southward on) broadway from Powderhouse.

well, true dorkiness is hip precisely because it's not trying to be hip.

people trying to be hip, whether doing so by feigning dorkiness or not, are often entirely unhip.

Trying to be hip is lame, getting in touch with one's inner dork is not.

The least cool people tend to be the ones who are trying to make you feel uncool.

i live right nextdoor to pemberton--the bookstore :)...at 4am my roommates *cough* borrow some bagels from the bread truck. Yes they go quickly but at 9am on weekend they carry massive quantities...and you can get bagel sandwiches made on request...Plus!

Also, the least cool people are all over at Starbucks. :-)

I live in Teele and am also a bagel snob (though not of the New York/New Jersey variety - I'm just Jewish), and I found their bagels less than magnificent. They were too doughy, just like round bread, not properly boiled. I've had the same "where are the decent bagels" problem; usually I make do with Bruegger's in Porter, which is surprisingly good for a chain (assuming you avoid the square "bagels").

Want to start a bagel deli in Davis? ;)

There haven't been good bagels in years, since Finagle ruined bagels for the rest of us. Rumor has it that even most NY bagels are shite these days. But if you want my recipe (pretty easy) just say; I've resorted to making my own.

[livejournal.com profile] easy_wind mentioned this but I just want to underscore: the best bagels in the area come from Kupel's on Harvard Street in Brookline, between Union Square and Coolidge Corner. You probably won't find anything up to your standard anywhere in Somerville or Cambridge (though you might try the ones at S&S in Inman Square).

Go to Kupel's, buy a couple dozen, and freeze 'em!

Oooh - I'd love your recipe, if you don't mind sharing. I've tried making them before, but I don't have a good recipe.

Good NY bagels are not available in Davis Square, but they are closer than Brookline. Bagels By US is on Mass Ave in Arlington, and they say they sell "H&H bagels." I don't know if they use the H&H recipe, or get frozen dough from NYC, but the bagels are cooked in Arlington, and the quality is quite good (including texture.) You can get there from Davis Square by walking a few blocks to Mass Ave and taking the #77 bus to Arlington. Bagels By US is just past the center, on the right side of the street. (There's a Johnny Foodmaster on the other side.)
