My girlfriend and I just moved here from California and are getting settled in.  We are both from MA but I started riding motorcycles out in CA and she started riding on the back of mine.  Now we are back and I am noticing so many bikes and scooters and I swear it is more than I ever saw before when I lived here.  She says the same, but neither of us are sure if we are just noticing them more because we are more aware of them due to having taken up riding after we left.  Maybe gas prices are upping the interest?  What does everyone think?

yea, i think it's both gas prices and a sea change in culture in general. people are talking about biking more, just for its own sake, more than i've ever seen before.

Absolutely. Over the last half-century, cycling's popularity has moved in waves and been driven by a complex set of effects. Gas is one of them, but not always the most important. For whatever reason, bike culture is big right now. I'm just trying to enjoy it!

Wait a minute -- isn't this post about motorcycling? I don't know who put the "bicycle" tag on it -- it wasn't me and it wasn't the OP.

My friend used to ride and he said it's actually declining due to so many accidents. That's the reason he stopped riding. He did notice some inexperienced, irresponsible riders which was why some riders had stopped riding. There were more motorcycle riders out about two or three years ago then there are now. There are more scooters now then before though.

I've been motorcycling here for about 3 years now. There are definitely way more bikes and scooters on the road now vs just last summer, much less when I started riding. The local bike shops aren't able to keep scooters or 250/500cc bikes in the shop for long at all these days.

I think it's great and hope the trend continues.

The flip side to more cycles is of course more accidents... http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2008/08/increase_report.html

i notice that the article says nothing about how many of the killed motorcyclists were drinking, as opposed to being hit by drunk drivers of automobiles.
